    I Have a Dream


    I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation


    "قبل مائة عام،
    Five score years ago,

    أعلن أحدُ الأمريكيين العِظام، والذي نقف الآن في أثرٍ من آثاره ،
    a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today,

    It came as a joyous daybreak

    to end the long night of their captivity


    ولكن، وبعد مائة عام،
    But one hundred years later,


    يجب علينا أن نواجه الحقيقة المأساويّة وهي أن الزنجيّ لا يزالُ مُعاقاً بقيودِ العزلِ العرقيّ،
    the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation

    وأغلالِ العنصريّة.

    and the chains of discrimination

    بعد مائةِ عامٍ،

    One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty

    in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity

    لا يزالُ الزنجيُّ يذبُل في زوايا المجتمع الأمريكي،
    the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society

    and finds himself an exile in his own land

    And so we've come here today

    كي نصوّر لكم وضعاً مروّعاً
    to dramatize a shameful condition


    لقد أتينا إلى عاصمة دولتنا
    In a sense we've come to our nation's capital


    لنصرف "شيكاً"؛
    to cash a check

    فعندما كتب الذين أنشئوا جمهوريتنا كلماتٍ عن الدستور

    When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution

    وإعلان الاستقلال،
    and the Declaration of Independence,

    to which every American was to fall heir

    وحريةٍ، وسعيٍ حثيثٍ نحو السعادة.
    of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."è


    إنه لمن الواضح للعيان أن أمريكا اليوم
    It is obvious today that America


    خالفت بنود ذلك الصكّ
    has defaulted on this promissory note,

    كلما تعلّق الأمرُ بمواطنيها السود.
    insofar as her citizens of color are concerned

    فبدلاً من الوفاء بأحكام ذلك الالتزام،
    Instead of honoring this sacred obligation,

    أعطت أمريكا الزنوجَ (شيكاً) زائفاً.

    America has given the Negro people a bad check,

    (شيكاً) كُتبَ عليه بعد محاولة صرفه: " لا يوجد رصيدٌ كافٍ" .

    a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."ç


    ولكننا نرفضُ أن نصدّق
    But we refuse to believe

    بأن مصرف العدل قد أفلس.
    that the bank of justice is bankrupt

    نرفضُ أن نصدّق
    We refuse to believe


    بأن لا أموال كافية في الخزائن الضخمة للفرص في هذه البلاد.
    that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation

    لذا، فقد قدِمنا لنصرف هذا (الشيك)
    And so, we've come to cash this check,

    الذي سيمنحنا، نزولاً عند طلبنا، ثروةَ الحريّة،

    a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom

    وأمن العدالة.
    and the security of justice

    كما أننا قدمنا إلى هذه البقعة المبجّلة
    We have also come to this hallowed spot

    لنذكّر أمريكا بالإلحاح الجبّار للآن
    to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now

    إن هذا الوقت ليس وقتُ الانخراط في التهدئة،
    This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off

    أو وقت تعاطي مسكنّات التدرجية.
    or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism


    الآن هو الوقتُ الذي فيه نُبرم وعوداً حقيقية للديمقراطية.
    Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy

    الآن هو الوقتُ الذي فيه ننهضُ من الظلام
    Now is the time to rise from the dark

    ونهجر وادي التمييز العنصري


    and desolate valley of segregation

    لنصلَ إلى الطريق المشمس للعدالة العرقية.

    to the sunlit path of racial justice.


    الآن هو الوقتُ الذي فيه نرفعُ أمتنا من الرمال المتحركة للظلم العنصري،
    Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice

    إلى صخرةِ الأخوّةِ الصلبة
    to the solid rock of brotherhood

    الآن هو الوقت الذي فيه نفتحُ أبواب الفرص لكل أبناء الرب.
    Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children

    إن الأمر قد يُصبح مُهلكاً إن تغافلت الدولةُ عن إلحاح هذا الوقت،
    It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment


    لن يمرّ صيف السخط القائظُ هذا
    This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass

    حتى يأتي خريفٌ يُنعشُ في هذه البلاد الحرية والمساواة.
    until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality

    وإن عام 1963 ليس النهاية، بل البداية

    Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning


    إن أولئك الذين يتمنون أنه لابد للرجل الأسود من أن يكبح غضبه،
    And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam


    ويرضى بواقعه،
    and will now be content

    The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation

    until the bright day of justice emerges


    ولكن هناك شيءٌ يجب عليّ قوله لأبناءِ شعبي
    But there is something that I must say to my people,


    الذين يقفون على عتبةٍ ساخنةٍ
    who stand on the warm threshold


    توصلهم إلى قصر العدالة.
    which leads into the palace of justice:

    يجب علينا في عملية حصولنا على مكاننا الشرعيّ
    In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must


    أن لا نرتكب أفعالاً غير شرعية.
    not be guilty of wrongful deeds

    دعونا لا نبحثُ عما يُطفئُ ظمأنا للحرية
    Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom

    بالشرب من كاس المرارة والكراهية.
    by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred


    يجبُ علينا دوماً أن نقود كفاحنا إلى
    مستوىً عالٍ من الكرامة وضبطِ النفس.
    We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline

    يجبُ علينا أن لا نسمح لاحتجاجنا
    We must not allow our creative protest

    أن ينحطّ على درجةِ العنفِ الجسدي.
    to degenerate into physical violence

    ومرةً بعد مرة،
    Again and again,


    يجبُ علينا أن نبلغ القمم المهيبة لاجتماع قوة الجسد مع قوة الروح.

    we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force


    إن روح النضالِ الجديدة والرائعة،
    The marvelous new militancy

    والتي تشبّع بها مجتمعُ السود،
    which has engulfed the Negro community

    لا يجبُ أن تقودنا إلى الارتيابِ في جميع البيض؛
    must not lead us to a distrust of all white people,

    لأن العديد من إخواننا البيض،
    for many of our white brothers,


    كما دلّ على هذا وجودهم اليوم بيننا،
    as evidenced by their presence here today,


    أدركوا أن قدرهم مقيّدٌ بقدرنا،
    have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny

    وحرّيتهم هي رابطٌ لا يقبل الانفصام عن حريّتنا.
    And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom

    فنحنُ لا يمكننا أن نمضي وحدنا

    We cannot walk alone

      وبينما نحن نمضي قُدماً،
      And as we walk,

      يجبُ علينا أن نأخذ على أنفسنا عهداً
      we must make the pledge


      بأن نواصل المسيرة.
      that we shall always march ahead


      فلا يمكننا أن نتراجع.

      هنالك أناسٌ يسألون أنصار الحقوقِ المدنيّة:

      ما بقيَ الزنجيُّ ضحيةً لرعبٍ لا يوصف من وحشية رجال الشرطة.

      as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality


      لن نرضى أبداً
      We can never be satisfied

      ما دامت أجسادنا مثقلة بجهدِ الترحال،
      as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel,


      ولا تستطيع الحصول على مثوى في الفنادق الرخيصة المنتشرة على الطرق الطويلة،
      cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways

      أو في الفنادق الكبيرة في المدن.

      and the hotels of the cities


      لن نرضى

      *We cannot be satisfied


      ما دامت حركةُ الزنجيّ
      as long as the negro's basic mobility


      مقيدةً بالانتقالِ من حيٍ صغيرٍ إلى حيٍ أكبر.
      is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one


      لن نرضى أبداً
      We can never be satisfied


      ما دام الزنجيُّ في "المسيسيبي" لا يملك حق التصويت،
      as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote



      والزنجيُّ في "نيويورك" لا يؤمنُ في شيءٍ يصوّتُ من أجله.
      and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote

      لا، لا، لسنا راضون.
      No, no, we are not satisfied,


      ولن نرضى حتى يتدفّق العدلُ كالماء،
      and we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters,


      والاستقامةُ كالنهرِ العظيم
      and righteousness like a mighty stream."1


      أنا لم أنس
      I am not unmindful

      أن بعضكم قد جاء إلى هنا


      that some of you have come here

      بعد ويلاتٍ ومحنٍ عصيبة.


      out of great trials and tribulations

      فبعضكم قد خرج لتوّه من زنزانات السجن الضيّقة.
      Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells

      وبعضكم قَدِم من مناطق

      And some of you have come from areas

      جعلهم مطلبُ الحرية فيها تحت وطأة الإعتداء المستمر لعواصف الاضطهاد،


      where your quest -- quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution


      وجعلهم مصعوقين بسبب وحشية رجال الشرطة،
      and staggered by the winds of police brutality

      فأصبحتم جميعاً متمرسّين في الألم.

      You have been the veterans of creative suffering

      واصلوا عملكم بإيمانٍ قوي
      Continue to work with the faith

      بأن الألم المفروض علينا هو ألمٌ افتدائي في سبيل القضية.


      that unearned suffering is redemptive




      عودوا إلى "المسيسيبي"،
      Go back to Mississippi,


      وعودوا إلى "ألاباما".
      go back to Alabama,


      وعودا إلى الأحياء الفقيرة الضيّقة



      go back to the slums and ghettos



      في مدننا الشمالية،

      of our northern cities,

      واعلموا أنه بطريقةٍ ما سوف يتغير هذا الوضع.


      knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed


      دعونا لا نتخبّط في وادي اليأس.


      Let us not wallow in the valley of despair,


      إخواني، أقول لكم اليوم بأنه
      I say to you today, my friends


      رغم الصعوبات والإحباطات التي نمرّ بها،
      And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow,

      حتى ولاية "المسيسيبي"، والتي تُعدّ صحراء قائظة

      بفعل حرارة الظلم والاضطهاد،

      بأن أطفالي الأربعة

      بأنه في يومٍ من الأيام في " ألاباما"،
      that one day, down in Alabama,

      والتي بها تقطر شفتا الحاكم كلماتِ التطفّل ومنع تنفيذ قرارات الدولة في الولاية،

      with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips

      dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -


      أحلمُ بأن تتحول الولاية إلى درجةٍ حيث يستطيع الأولاد والبنات السود أن يشبكوا أياديهم
      - one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands


      بأيادي الأولاد والبنات البيض،
      with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers


      \ سوف يُرفع كلُّ وادٍ،
      every valley shall be exalted,

      وتُخفضُ كلُّ الجبال والتلال،
      and every hill and mountain shall be made low,


      وتُسوّى الأراضي غير المستوية،
      the rough places will be made plain,


      وتُقوّمُ الطرق المعوجّة،

      هذا هو أملنا.
      This is our hope,

      فليُقرع جرسُ الحرية

      وإن أرادت أمريكا أن تصبح دولةً عظيمة،
      And if America is to be a great nation,

      And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire



      عندما نقرع جرس الحرية،
      And when this happens,

      سنستطيع أن نعجّل قدوم ذلك اليوم المنتظر

        بأنه في يومٍ من الأيام في " ألاباما"،
