Lute \ عود
This word describes a music instrument with five to six chords which is plucked. The word is a borrowing from the Arabic word عود‘ūd / ﺍﻠﻌﻭﺪ al-‘ūd which meant in Arabic “wood” but which then was used metonymically for the instrument made of wood to distinguish it from other types of lutes which possessed a leather corpus. The Moors and the Sarazenes brought the lute to Spain and to Sicily in the first half of the 8th century. The word started to spread all over Europe later, that is from the 13th century on. Obviously the reason for this late spreading of the word can be found in music history. There one gets the hint that in the 13th century the lute played a role in music, on the secular side with the troubadours et trouvères who were travelling musicians during the 12th and 13th century in northern and southern France. Those musicians made the lute more popular in Europe, an action which paved the way for the great success the lute had during the renaissance especially in England where composers wrote masses of lute songs. To come back to the borrowed forms of the Arabic word in the European languages, one can see again some small changes. For example the Old Spanish form alod (1254) took the Arabic article ﻝ ﺍ and omitted the phoneme //. Only the vowel that vocalized the Arabic <ﻉ> was taken into the Spanish form of the word. In Spanish, the word alod later became alaút (1330) and again later in 1343 the remnant of the Arabic article ﻝ ﺍ was dropped to get the new form laúd. One might assume that the Spanish accent on top of the <ú> could be a phonological reminiscence to the sound of the omitted Arabic <ﻉ>. The word went from Old Spanish into Old Provencal and then into Old French as leüt, then luth; the second and newer form luth resembling to the English form lute which was recorded in the 14th century (Tazi: 210).
