[إسلام بدي]

والمصر على شربه فاقد للعدالة ،
The one who persists in smoking is no longer regarded as being of good character,

لا يفعل كبيرة ، ولا يصر على صغيرة ،

who does not commit major sins or persist in minor sins,

ولا يوصف بفسق ،

and who is not known as an evildoer

لكن إن تقدم بها العمر ،
But if she is getting older

وخشيت أن لا يتقدم لها أحد في المستقبل القريب ،
and fears that no one will propose to her in the near future,

وكان هذا الخاطب مرضي الدين والخلق في الجوانب الأخرى ،

and this suitor is religiously committed and of good character in other ways,

من المحافظة على الصلاة ، وطيب المعشر ، وحسن الخلق ،

such as if he prays regularly and is kind and has a good attitude,


والبعد عن القبائح والرذائل ،
and he keeps away from evil and immoral things,

وذلك بعد السؤال الدقيق عنه ،
after enquiring closely about him,


فيكون بقاؤها مع الزوج محاطا بالهم والكدر
and staying with the husband may cause her distress and hardship



وفق الله الجميع لما يحب ويرضى
May Allaah help us all to do that which He loves and which pleases Him

فسريع الغضب يستفزه أيسر عارض ،
The one who is quick to get angry will react to the slightest annoyance


ويجزع عند أول نازل ،
and panic at any problem;

ولا شك أنه أحوج الناس إلى الدعاء بسعة الصدر

undoubtedly he is the one who is most in need of praying for peace of mind,


وحسن الخلق ؛
and a good attitude

فليس هذا من الدعاء بالبلاء ،
Therefore this does not come under the heading of praying for calamity

أو استعجاله ،
or seeking to hasten it;


ربنا أفرغ علينا صبرا
Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience

من المجددين البارزين في الإسلام
is regarded as one of the prominent renewers and revivers of Islam


ولا يزال أهل العلم ينهلون من علمه في الرد على أعداء الدين
Scholars still refer to his books to refute the enemies of Islam

وليس هو بحاجة لمن يزكيه من أمثالنا
and he does not need anyone like us to praise him

تبين للمنصف كذب الادعاءات
makes clear to any fair-minded person the falseness of the claims

التي يفتريها أعداء الملة
that have been fabricated by the enemies of Islam



وهو أنه هدم أصولهم فخرَّ عليهم السقف من فوقهم
he demolished their principles and “and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them


وفريد العصر ، علماً


unrivalled in our time in terms of knowledge


وتنويراً إلهيّاً ً، وكرماً ، ونصحاً للأمَّة ،

spiritual enlightenment, generosity, sincerity towards the ummah,



وحصَّل ما لم يحصله غير

and acquired knowledge that no one else acquired



برَع في تفسير القرآن ،
He excelled in Qur’aanic commentary

وغاص في دقيق معانيه ، بطبع سيَّال ،

and delved deeply into its subtle meanings

وخاطر إلى مواقع الإِشكال ميَّال ،
He derived meanings from it that no one else managed to do before him


وفاق الناس في معرفة الفقه ،

He surpassed all people in knowledge of jurisprudence



ونصر السنَّة بأوضح حجج وأبهر براهين ،
He supported the Sunnah with the strongest evidence and proofs


وأُوذي في ذات اللّه من المخالفين ،
He was harmed for the sake of Allaah by his opponents


وأُخيف في نصر السنَّة المحضة ،


and persecuted for his support of the pure Sunnah,


حتى أعلى الله مناره ،
until Allaah caused him to prevail

وجمع قلوب أهل التقوى على محبته والدعاء له
and caused the pious to unite in loving him and praying for him,


وَكَبَتَ أعداءه ،
and suppressed his enemies

وجبل قلوب الملوك والأمراء على الانقياد له غالباً ، وعلى طاعته ،
Allaah made kings and commanders inclined to follow him and obey him,


أحيى به الشام ، بل والإسلام ،
and he revived Syria – and indeed Islam

through his efforts,

بعد أن كاد ينثلم
when it was almost defeated,

بتثبيت أولى الأمر لما أقبل حزب التتر والبغي في خيلائهم ،

by urging the rulers to resist the Tatars,


فظُنت بالله الظنون ،
when people were harbouring doubts about Allaah


وزلزل المؤمنون ،
and the believers were tried and shaken with a mighty shaking

واشْرَأَب النفاق وأبدى صفحته

and hypocrisy grew strong


ومحاسنه كثيرة ،
His good qualities are many,


وهو أكبر من أن ينبه على سيرته مثلي ،
and he is too great for a man like me to talk about his life


لم يُرَ تحت أديم السماء مثل شيخكم ابن تيمية
there was never seen under the canopy of heaven anyone like your Shaykh


أصدق النَّاس عقداً ،
he was the most sincere of people,

وأصحهم علماً وعزماً ، وأنفذهم وأعلاهم في انتصار الحق وقيامه همةً ،

the most sound in knowledge, the most effective, the most serious in supporting the truth,


وأسخاهم كفّاً
the most generous,

صانهما الله عن هذه السمة الشنيعة ، والنسبة الفظيعة

Allaah protected them from this abhorrent accusation




وقدس الله روح الشافعي
May Allaah sanctify the soul of al-Shaafa’i,


فليشهد الثقلان أني
let the two races (of mankind and jinn) bear witness that I am


وقفتُ على هذا التأليف النافع
I came across this beneficial book


وتضلعه من العلوم النافعة
and how prominent he is in many branches of knowledge

بما عظمه بين العلماء وشرَّفه
to such an extent that he became greatly respected and honoured by the scholars


ولا ينكر ذلك إلا من جهل مقداره ،
Nobody rejects that except one who is ignorant of his position,

أو تجنب الإنصاف ،
or is unfair

فما أغلط من تعاطى ذلك وأكثر عثاره ،
How wrong is the one who thinks that way and how mistaken he is

أن يقينا شرور أنفسنا ،
وحصائد ألسنتنا
to protect us from the evil of our own souls
and of our tongues

بمنِّه وفضله
by His blessing and grace


ومن أعجب العجب أن هذا الرجل
It is most amazing that this man

كان أعظم الناس قياماً على أهل البدع
was the staunchest opponent of the innovators

وهم يحرصون على قراءته
they are very keen to recite it

تبعا للروايات الواردة في فضله وأثره البالغ في تربية النفس
in accordance with reports that speak of its virtue and far-reaching effect in self-discipline

ولما يحتويه من المعاني الرفيعة
and because of what it contains of sublime meanings

ويُجْدي في كفاية شرّ الأعداء ،
it suffices against the evil of one’s enemies

وفي فتح باب الرّزق ، وفي غفران الذّنوب
and it opens the door to provision and forgiveness of sins




تُكْفَ وَتُنْصَر وَتُرْزَق ،
you will be sufficed and supported and granted provision,

وَلَنْ تُعْدَم المغفرة
and you will never be without forgiveness


أوجَبَ لك طولُ الصحبة لنا أن نَجُودَ لكَ بما سألت
because you have accompanied us for so long, we should give you what you ask for



وَبِقُوَّتِكَ الَّتي قَهَرْتَ بِها كُلَّ شَيْء ،
and by virtue of Your power by which You dominate all things


وَخَضَعَ لَها كُلُّ شَيء ، وَذَلَّ لَها كُلُّ شَيء
and everything submits to it,


، وَبِجَبَرُوتِكَ الَّتي غَلَبْتَ بِها كُلَّ شَيء ،
and by virtue of Your might by which You overcome all things,

وَبِعِزَّتِكَ الَّتي لا يَقُومُ لَها شَيءٌ
and by virtue of Your power, which nothing can resist

وَبِسُلْطانِكَ الَّذي عَلا كُلَّ شَيء
and by virtue of Your sovereignty, which transcends all things,

وَبِوَجْهِكَ الْباقي بَعْدَ فَناءِ كُلِّ شَيء ،
and by virtue of Your eternal Countenance which will remain after all things cease to be,


وَبِأَسْمائِكَ الَّتي مَلأَتْ أرْكانَ كُلِّ شَيء ،
and by virtue of Your names which filled the space of all things,

وَبِعِلْمِكَ الَّذي أَحاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيء ،
and by virtue of Your knowledge which encompasses all things,


يا نُورُ يا قُدُّوسُ
O Light, O Most Holy,

الذُّنُوبَ الَّتي تَهْتِكُ الْعِصَمَ
sins which detain supplication

الذُّنُوبَ الَّتي تُنْزِلُ النِّقَمَ
sins which bring down calamity

وهو دعاء طويل مسجوع فيه كثير من التكلف
an over-wrought poetic rhythm


على فرض أن كل ألفاظه ومعانيه حسنة
Even if we assume that all of its words and meanings are good,


فلا ينبغي المواظبة عليه
it is not appropriate to recite it regularly

الرافضة ومن نحا نحوهم
the Raafidis and others of their ilk


يقدسونه ويعظمونه

It is stated above that they regard it as holy, venerate it


ويرفعون شأنه ،
and hold it in high esteem


وما كان هذا وصفه فإنه لا يتدين به .
Something that is like that should not be taken as a religious practice


إِذَا كَانَ فِي فِعْلٍ مُسْتَحَبٍّ مَفْسَدَةٌ رَاجِحَةٌ لَمْ يَصِرْ مُسْتَحَبًّا
If it is more likely that a likable action will result in evil consequences, it is no longer likable

علو الهمة ، وطلب معالي الأمور ،
High ambition, sublime aims


والرغبة في مزيد الترقي والتقرب إلى الله
and the desire to attain high status and draw closer to Allah


بفعل الصالحات وترك المنكرات
by doing righteous deeds and refraining from that which is forbidden


لقد كرم الإسلام المرأة تكريما عظيما
Islam honours women greatly


كرمها باعتبارها ( أُمّاً ) يجب برها وطاعتها والإحسان إليها
It honours women as mothers who must be respected, obeyed and treated with kindness

وحرم عقوقها وإغضابها
And Islam forbids disobeying one’s mother or making her angry,


ولو بمجرد التأفف
even by saying a mild word of disrespect



فَلا تَقُلْ لَهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلا تَنْهَرْهُمَا

say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them


وَقُلْ لَهُمَا قَوْلا كَرِيمًا
but address them in terms of honour


وَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ
And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility

وبالجملة ؛ فالإسلام رفع من شأن المرأة
To conclude: Islam raised the status of women,

التكبر صفة ذميمة
Arrogance is a blameworthy characteristic


يتصف به إبليس وجنوده
which is the feature of Iblees and his cohorts


ممن طمس الله تعالى على قلبه
those on whose hearts Allaah has placed a seal



فمن نازع الله فيها أهلكه الله
Whoever seeks to compete with Allaah in that, Allaah will destroy him,

وقصمه وضيق عليه
wreak vengeance on him and make things difficult for him


والكبر صفة من الصفات التي لا تنبغي إلا لله تعالى
Pride is an attribute that is not befitting for anyone except Allaah


العز إزاره والكبرياء رداؤه
Might is His garment and pride is His cloak;


فمن ينازعني عذبته
whoever seeks to compete with Me concerning them, I will punish him



وهذا وعيد شديد في الكبر
This is a stern warning against arrogance


مصرح بتحريمه
which clearly demonstrates that it is impermissible



وكل من حاول الكبر والارتفاع
Everyone who tries to be arrogant and put himself above others,


خفضه الله تعالى في الأسفلين
Allaah will bring him down among the lowest of the low



وجعله في الأذلين
, and will humiliate him,

لأنه خالف الأصل
because he is going against reality,

فجازاه الله تعالى بنقيض قصده ،
so Allaah will punish him by thwarting his aims;


الجزاء من جنس العمل

the punishment is to fit the crime


والذي يتكبر على الناس
The one who is arrogant towards the people


يكون يوم القيامة مداساً تحت أقدام الناس فيذله الله تعالى
will be trampled beneath the feet of the people on the Day of Resurrection,


جزاء ما كان منه من الكبر .
as a punishment for his arrogance


ألا يقبل الرجل الحق ويجادل بالباطل
does not accept the truth and produces false arguments against it


الكبر : بطر الحق وغمط الناس " .
Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people


أن تعجبه نفسه من جمال أو حسن ،
When a person admires himself for his beauty or handsomeness,


أو ثراء في الملبس أو المأكل
or the fineness of his food or clothing,

فيتبختر ويتكبر
so he feels proud and arrogant


ويفخر على الناس
and feels superior to people


بينما رجل يمشي في حلة تعجبه نفسه
Whilst a man was walking, dragging his garment with pride,


مرجل جمته
with his hair nicely combed,


إذ خسف الله به

Allaah caused the earth to swallow him


فهو يتجلجل إلى يوم القيامة
and he will go on sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection



أنا أكثر منك مالاً وأعز نفراً
I am more than you in wealth and stronger in respect of men


وقد يكون ذلك بالتفاخر بالعشيرة والنسب
It may be that he was boasting about his tribe and linage




ومن طرق علاج الكبر
One of the remedies for arrogance

أن ترى نفسك كالناس وأنهم مثلك

is to think of yourself as being just like other people

and realize that they are like you,

وأن التقوى هي المعيار الحق
piety is the true criterion of superiority

وليعلم المسلم المتكبر أنه مهما بلغ
The arrogant Muslim should realize that no matter what he achieves,


فهو أضعف من أن يبلغ طول الجبال
he is still too weak to attain a stature like the mountains in height


أو أن يخرق الأرض
or rend nor penetrate the earth

كما قال الله تعالى : { ولا تصعر خدك للناس
And turn not your face away from men with pride,


ولا تمش في الأرض مرحا
nor walk in insolence through the earth


إن الله لا يحب كل مختال فخور .

Verily, Allaah likes not any arrogant boaster



واقصد في مشيك
And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking,


واغضض من صوتك
and lower your voice


، إن أنكر الأصوات لصوت الحمير
Verily, the harshest of all voices is the braying of the asses


وهذا نهي عن الخيلاء وأمر بالتواضع ،
is a prohibition of arrogance and is enjoining humility


والمرح : شدة الفرح ،
Marah (translated here as insolence) is excessive joy


تجاوز الإنسان قدره

thinking too highly of oneself




فالتكبر والبطر والخيلاء وتجاوز الإنسان قدره : مذموم .
Arrogance, vanity, showing off and thinking too highly of oneself are blameworthy;


والفرح والنشاط محمود
joy and energy are praiseworthy

‏ غير أولي الإربة من الرجال
The sexually impotent men


‏ أجر غير ممنون ‏
Unfailing reward

‏ زواج باطل ‏
Invalid marriage



3- لاحول ولاقوة الا بالله

There is no power and no strength save in Allah

Blessed be Allah


8- بمشيئة الله

God willing

9- لا قدر الله

! God forbid

Be mindful of Allah; fear Allah

From a distance, philosophy seems weird, irrelevant, boring – and yet also just a little intriguing

. Generosity is more passionate than close relations.


كفى بالقناعة ملكا وبحسن الخلق نعيماً


. It is enough for satisfaction to be a kingdom, and with good manners to be a delight.


من كساه الحياء ثوبه لم ير الناس عيبه

. He whose shyness bestowed upon him its veil, people would not see his flaws.

وإقامة الحجة على المكلفين
and establish proof against those who are accountable


وذلك لتظاهر الأدلة على وجوب نشر الدين
because of the abundant evidence that it is obligatory to spread the religion


ولو كان ترك الناس لجهلهم سائغا ،
If leaving the people in ignorance was acceptable

ولا كلف الدعاة .

and the callers would not have been charged with their duty.


فليس لأحد أن يتوهم أن ترك الجهال على جهلهم جائز
No one should imagine that leaving the ignorant in their ignorance is permissible

فإن هذا لا يقوله عاقل فضلا عن عالم
No rational person would say this, let alone any scholar.


الجاهل الذي لم يفرط
the ignorant person whose ignorance is not the result of negligence


إنا وجدنا آباءنا على أمة وإنا على آثارهم مقتدون
we found our forefathers following a way and we are following in their footsteps


كتب الشيعة التي هي منبع الوضع والكذب
the books of the Shi‘ah which are full of fabrications and lies

والمجهول مطية الكذب
and the unknown narrator is used as a means to tell lies


سُمُّوا به لفرط جهلهم
they called it that because of the extent of their ignorance.

ويكفي الجهل والجهالة سوءً أن يتبرأ منهما الإنسان
Ignorance and foolishness together are sufficient for a person to disavow himself of them,


لأن الناس كانوا فيها على جهل عظيم
because at that time the people’s ignorance was great


فما تزال بعض المجتمعات تعيش في مستنقعات الجاهلية
Some societies are still living in the depths of ignorance

وإنما الطاعة في المعروف
rather obedience is only with regard to that which is right and proper

فقد أحسنت صنعا
then you have done well,

بل لا بد من رد المظالم
rather you have no choice but to return to them that which is rightfully theirs

الغضب «جنون مؤقت»
Anger is temporary madness

إن الناس يغضبون لأسباب شتى
people get angry for all sorts of reasons,

، بعضها تافه، مثل أن يعترضك شخص ما بسيارته على الطريق السريع، .
from the trivial ones someone cut me off on the highway
وبعضها جاد وخطير، مثل استمرار موت الناس في سوريا دون أن يبالي أحد.
to the really serious ones (people keep dying in Syria and nobody is doing anything about it

لكنَّ أغلب الغضب منشؤه الأسباب التافهة
But, mostly, anger arises for trivial reasons
. ولهذا خصصت جمعية علم النفس الأمريكية على موقعها قسمًا لإدارة الغضب.
That’s why the American Psychological Association has a section of its website devoted to anger management

والمثير للاهتمام أنَّ هذا القسم يشبه كثيرًا أقدم أطروحة حول هذا الموضوع بعنوان «حول الغضب»
Interestingly, it reads very much like one of the oldest treatises on the subject, On Anger

وأننا ينبغي لنا عدم التصرف بناء على هذا الغضب أبدًا،

we should never act on the basis of it ,

«حتى وإن كانت الرذائل الأخرى تؤثر على أحكامنا
though ‘other vices affect our judgment,
فإنَّ الغضب يؤثر على سلامتنا العقلية:
anger affects our sanity

إذ تأتي هذه الرذائل في صورة هجمات خفيفة
others come in mild attacks

وتنمو بشكل غير ملحوظ،
and grow unnoticed,

لكنَّ عقول الناس تنغمس فجأة في الغضب.».
but men’s minds plunge abruptly into anger.

فكثافة الغضب وحدته لا تعتمد أبدًا على سبب هذا الغضب،
… Its intensity is in no way regulated by its origin:

إذ يصل إلى أعلى المستويات، من أكثر البدايات تفاهة
for it rises to the greatest heights from the most trivial beginnings.’

The conversations I have with people from all over the world

تميل إلى أن تكون محادثات ودية وبناءة
tend to be cordial and mutually instructive,

لكن بين الفينة والأخرى تأخذ هذه المحادثات طابعًا كريهًا.

من ذلك أنَّ مؤلفًا بارزًا اختلف معي مؤخرًا حول مسألة تقنية
A prominent author who recently disagreed with me on a technical matter

quickly labelled me as belonging to a ‘department of bullshit’.

Ouch! How is it possible not to get offended by this sort of thing

فما الذي استفاده الشاتم من شتيمته
what has the abuser gained with his invective?’

يتطلب التعود على التصرف كصخرة تجاه الإهانات وقتًا وممارسة،
to develop the attitude of a rock toward insults takes time and practice,

لكنني أتحسن في ذلك –
but I’m getting better at it.

تسألني ما الذي فعلته ردًا على التبجح المذكور أعلاه؟
So what did I do in response to the above-mentioned rant?

A relaxed mind does not get angry.

والبذاءة المتوقعة من بعض إخواننا من البشر.
and the predictable nastiness of some of our fellow human beings.

أحد أهم الأشياء التي يجب أن تتوقعها من الشخص السام هو الدراما،
One thing you can guarantee from a toxic person is drama.

فالفوضى ستحيط بك من كل مكان،.
Chaos seems to surround them somehow,

سواء بسبب استمرارهم الدائم في الجدال، أو التسبب في مشاكل،
either because they're always arguing with someone, causing problems,

أو الأحداث غير القابلة للتصديق التي تحدث لهم باستمرار
or unbelievable things keep happening to them

فالصديق السام يميل دومًا إلى أن يكون شخصًا يستهلكنا تمامًا، .
A toxic friend tends to be someone who sucks us

سواء عبر الشعور المستمر بالعظمة والمبالغة
in either by being very amazing, very grandiose,


أو عبر ترك إحساس دائم بأنهم يعيشون في حزن ويحتاجون إلى العون».
or by being this sad creature that needs our help."

ومهما تكن قصتهم، فيمكنك أن تتأكد أنك ستسمع عنهم باستمرار، Whatever their story, you can guarantee you'll hear about it,

or worse, get dragged into it.

They have no respect for your space,

O’ dweller of my poetic vastness
وما نَسِيتكُ مرَّةْ..
I’ve never forgotten you at all
وَ جِئْتَ ذَاتَ قصيدٍ
You visited me once upon a verse
تُعِيْدُ لِلحبِ ذِكْرَهْ
Reviving the memory of love
إنِّي سَطَرْتُ حَنِينًا
I responded with a verse of passion
يُعانِقُ اليَوْمَ سَطْرَهْ
Embracing today its lines
وكِدْتُ يَا رُوحَ رُوحِي
I almost, my dearest of all,0
أَمُوتُ شَوْقً ا وَ حَسْرَةْ
Perished of longing and despair
وَ أَنْهَكَ العِشْقُ حَرْفِي
Affection exhausted my script
فَأَشْعَلَ الشَوْقُ حِبْرَه
And fondness ignited its ink
وغَالَبَ الدَمْعُ شِعْرِي
Tears defeated my poem, and
وَ جَاءَ يَطْلُبُ عُذْرَهْ
Came pleading for mercy
يَقُولُ يَا بَعْدَ عَيْنِي

For the heart adores its captivation

I don’t deny my affection!0
فَأَلْزِمِ القلبَ صَبْرَهْ
Suppressing my heart’s irritation
وَخَلِّ عَنْكَ التَجَنَّي
So avoid false accusation
فَفِي فُؤَادِيَ جَمْرَهْ
In my heart is a raging fire
وَ مَا بِصَدْرِيَ حُزنٌ
In my chest a huge sorrow
قد فَاقَ حَجْمَ المِجَرَة
Bigger than a galaxy’s mass
وَ لَيْسَ لِي غَيْر دمعٍ
I’ve only my tears to moan
يَشْكُو لِطَيْفِكَ هَجْرَهْ

Grave calamities and distressing news beset us
Causing us anxiety, inflicting injury



جلّ الذي لا يسهو

There is no one impeccable but Allah, Exalted is He
Glorified He who never oversees nor forget

He tossed him in the sea, restrained, saying:0

وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ

Woe to each sinful dealer in Falsehoods




لا تَعذَلِيه فَإِنَّ العَذلَ يُولِعُهُ = قَد قَلتِ حَقاً وَلَكِن لَيسَ يَسمَعُهُ

Reprove me not, for reproof helps only to inflame my passion;
You have spoken the truth, yet I heard it not

جاوَزتِ فِي لَومهُ حَداً أَضَرَّ بِهِ = مِن حَيثَ قَدرتِ أَنَّ اللَومَ يَنفَعُهُ

Your excessive blame has harmed me, although
You had my interest in mind when you blamed

فَاستَعمِلِي الرِفق فِي تَأِنِيبِهِ بَدَلاً = مِن عَذلِهِ فَهُوَ مُضنى القَلبِ مُوجعُهُ

Use gentleness instead of chiding,
For my heart is aching; I am in pain

قَد كانَ مُضطَلَعاً بِالخَطبِ يَحمِلُه = فَضُيَّقَت بِخُطُوبِ المَهرِ أَضلُعُهُ
I was once capable of facing grave trials, but demands for a dowry
Have weighed heavy on me; my strength sapped

يَكفِيهِ مِن لَوعَةِ التَشتِيتِ أَنَّ لَهُ = مِنَ النَوى كُلَّ يَومٍ ما يُروعُهُ

Separation has caused me intense pangs;
Being away from you is a nightmare

ما آبَ مِن سَفَرٍ إلاّ وَأَزعَجَهُ = رَأيٌ إِلى سَفَرٍ بِالعَزمِ يَزمَعُهُ

Whenever I return home, I am troubled by a new request
To resume my travels; once again away from you

كَأَنَّما هُوَ فِي حِلِّ وَمُرتحلٍ = مُوَكَّلٍ بِفَضاءِ اللَهِ يَذرَعُهُ

Must constant journeying be my only lot;
Must I unendingly pace God’s vast spaces


إِذا الزَمانَ أَراهُ في الرَحِيلِ غِنىً = وَلَو إِلى السَدّ أَضحى وَهُوَ يُزمَعُهُ

If Life assures me that travels bring me wealth,
I will not hesitate to make it to the China Wall


تأبى المطامعُ إلا أن تُجَشّمه = للرزق كداً وكم ممن يودعُهُ

Greed refuses to give me a break from my hard travels;
I am ever in search of a source of gain,
Always bidding farewell to friends and loved ones

وَما مُجاهَدَةُ الإِنسانِ تَوصِلُهُ = رزقَاً وَلادَعَةُ الإِنسانِ تَقطَعُهُ

Yet mighty efforts may not bring bounties within man’s reach,
Nor will contentment deprive him from life’s blessings

قَد وَزَّع اللَهُ بَينَ الخَلقِ رزقَهُمُ = لَم يَخلُق اللَهُ مِن خَلقٍ يُضَيِّعُهُ

God has distributed His bounties justly among people;
He will never withhold subsistence from anyone

لَكِنَّهُم كُلِّفُوا حِرصاً فلَستَ تَرى = مُستَرزِقاً وَسِوى الغاياتِ تُقنُعُهُ

People, however, have chosen to be greedy, ever in search of gain;
Never satisfied by less than attaining their coveted goals

وَالحِرصُ في الرِزقِ وَالأَرزاقِ قَد قُسِمَت = بَغِيُ أَلا إِنَّ بَغيَ المَرءِ يَصرَعُهُ

There is enough for everyone, but alas,
Selfish grasping contributes to man’s demise

وَالدهرُ يُعطِي الفَتى مِن حَيثُ يَمنَعُه = إِرثاً وَيَمنَعُهُ مِن حَيثِ يُطمِعُهُ

Life bestows blessings, even when it seems withholding;
It withholds when greed seems the only means to reach a goal

اِستَودِعُ اللَهَ فِي بَغدادَ لِي قَمَرا ً= بِالكَرخِ مِن فَلَكِ الأَزرارِ مَطلَعُهُ

I leave in God’s care a beloved in Karkh; fair as a bright moon,
Lovely as a flower in full bloom

وَدَّعتُهُ وَبوُدّي لَو يُوَدِّعُنِي = صَفوَ الحَياةِ وَأَنّي لا أَودعُهُ

When wistfully bidding her farewell, I wished I had instead bidden
A permanent farewell to life’s joys

وَكَم تَشبَّثْ بي يَومَ الرَحيلِ ضُحَىً = وَأَدمُعِي مُستَهِلّاتٍ وَأَدمُعُهُ

O, how she held me tight when we parted in mid-morning;
How her tears and mine profusely shed!

لا أَكُذبُ اللَهَ ثوبُ الصَبرِ مُنخَرقٌ = عَنّي بِفُرقَتِهِ لَكِن أَرَقِّعُهُ

God knows that my separation from her has exhausted my patience,
Even though I try to compose myself and seem resigned

إِنّي أَوَسِّعُ عُذري فِي جَنايَتِه ِ= بِالبينِ عِنهُ وَجُرمي لا يُوَسِّعُهُ

I try comforting myself that separation from her will help me acquire
The asked for dowry, yet the hoped for acquisition is never within my reach

رُزِقتُ مُلكاً فَلَم أَحسِن سِياسَتَهُ = وَكُلُّ مَن لا يُسُوسُ المُلكَ يَخلَعُهُ

I have had a vast wealth but failed to manage it well;
Mismanagement will only lead to grievous consequences

وَمَن غَدا لابِساً ثَوبَ النَعِيم بِلا = شَكرٍ عَلَيهِ فَإِنَّ اللَهَ يَنزَعُهُ

Whoever enjoys life’s blessings without showing gratitude,
God will take those blessings away from him


اِعتَضتُ مِن وَجهِ خِلّي بَعدَ فُرقَتِه ِ= كَأساً أَجَرَّعُ مِنها ما أَجَرَّعُهُ

Ever since my separation from my soul companion, I have drunk
the cup of sorrow; the very dregs


كَم قائِلٍ لِي ذُقتُ البَينَ قُلتُ لَه ُ= الذَنبُ وَاللَهِ ذَنبي لَستُ أَدفَعُهُ

Many a man has told me that I have tasted the pangs of separation;
My answer has been ‘I do not deny it; it is my fault.’


أَلا أَقمتَ فَكانَ الرُشدُ أَجمَعُهُ = لَو أَنَّنِي يَومَ بانَ الرُشدُ اتبَعُهُ

They say it is wise to stay home instead of wandering away; wish I have the right guidance to know the right course I should follow

إِنّي لأقطَعُ أيّامِي وَأدفِنُها =بِحَسرَةٍ مِنهُ فِي قَلبِي تُقَطِّعُهُ

I spend my days in pensive reflections;
Sadly meditating on heartrending woes

بِمَن إِذا هَجَعَ النُوّامُ بِتُّ لَه ُ= بِلَوعَةٍ مِنهُ لَيلى لَستُ أَهجَعُهُ
When others resort to sweet repose, I pass my nights thinking of the beloved.
Her memory causes me anguish; denying restful sleep

لا يَطمِئنُّ لِجَنبي مَضجَعُ وَكَذا = لا يَطمَئِنُّ لَهُ مُذ بِنتُ مَضجَعُهُ

Ever since I left her, my bed is never undisturbed by incessant tossing;
Her bed, for sure, must not be different

ما كُنتُ أَحسَبُ أَنَّ المَهرَ يَفجَعُنِي = بِهِ وَلا أَنّض بِي الأَيّامَ تَفجعُهُ

Never did I think that a dowry will inflict upon me such suffering and grief;
She, too, must be writhing in agony deep


حَتّى جَرى البَينُ فِيما بَينَنا بِيَد ٍ= عَسراءَ تَمنَعُنِي حَظّي وَتَمنَعُهُ

Scarcity of resources has caused this separation between us; still,
Neither am I able to gain riches, nor secure her hand in marriage

قَد كُنتُ مِن رَيبِ مَهرِي جازِعاً فَرِقا ً= فَلَم أَوقَّ الَّذي قَد كُنتُ أَجزَعُهُ

How often I dreaded that dowry, how it alarmed me! Yet just the same,
I was never able to shield myself from the source of my dismay

بِاللَهِ يا مَنزِلَ العَيشِ الَّذي دَرَست = آثارُهُ وَعَفَت مُذ بِنتُ أَربُعُهُ

O, my dear house! How empty you must seem!
How you have become an aberration ever since my departure!

هَل الزَمانُ مَعِيدُ فِيكَ لَذَّتُنا = أَم اللَيالِي الَّتي أَمضَّتهُ تُرجِّعُهُ

Will Time ever bring me back to live in you with the beloved?
Will the circumstances that caused me gripping pain
Relent and hasten a reunion between us?

فِي ذِمَّةِ اللَهِ مِن أَصبَحَت مَنزلَهُ = وَجادَ غَيثٌ عَلى مَغناكَ يُمرِعُهُ

I am at God’s mercy, dear house; may He ever shower you and your surroundings
With never-ceasing blessings

مَن عِندَهُ لِي عَهدُ لا يُضيّعُهُ = كَما لَهُ عَهدُ صِداقٍ لا أُضَيِّعُهُ

As for the beloved, she has indeed been faithful to me;
I, too, am equally loyal and true

وَمَن يُصَدِّعُ قَلبي ذِكرَهُ وَإِذا = جَرى عَلى قَلبِهِ ذِكري يُصَدِّعُهُ

When I remember her, my heart breaks, she too must feel the same
When memory of my love throbs in her heart

لأَصبِرَنَّ لِمَهرٍ لا يُمَتِّعُنِي =بِهِ وَلا بِيَ فِي حالٍ يُمَتِّعُهُ

I will patiently wait for a dowry that may never materialize;
Fully realizing that our dreams of sharing life together may not come true

عِلماً بِأَنَّ اِصطِباري مُعقِبُ فَرَجا ً= فَأَضيَقُ الأَمرِ إِن فَكَّرتَ أَوسَعُهُ

I will keep hoping that my patience be rewarded with fulfillment;
In thought we transcend our limited circumstances and expand

عَسى اللَيالي الَّتي أَضنَت بِفُرقَتَنا = جِسمي سَتَجمَعُنِي يَوماً وَتَجمَعُهُ

May the Fates, that enfeebled my body, due to separation from her,
Crown our parting with a sweet reunion

وَإِن تُغِلُّ أَحَدَاً مِنّا مَنيَّتَهُ = فَما الَّذي بِقَضاءِ اللَهِ يَصنَعُهُ

But if death should claim one of us ere we meet again,
We’ll accept our fate; God’s sovereign will be done

لِمَنْ أَطَابَ الكَلَامَ ، وَأَطْعَمَ الطَّعَامَ ، وَأَدَامَ الصِّيَامَ،
For those who speak kind words, give food, fast regularly,
وَصَلَّى بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ
and pray at night when people are asleep
إِنَّ خِيَارَكُمْ أَحَاسِنُكُمْ أَخْلَاقًا
Verily the best of you are those who are best in attitude
فِيهِ الْحَثّ عَلَى حُسْن الْخُلُق ، .
This offers encouragement to develop a good attitude,
وَبَيَان فَضِيلَة صَاحِبه ،
and it highlights the virtue of the one who does so
وَهُوَ صِفَة أَنْبِيَاء اللَّه تَعَالَى وَأَوْلِيَائِهِ
. This is the attribute of the Prophets and close friends of Allah, may He be exalted
حَقِيقَة حُسْن الْخُلُق بَذْل الْمَعْرُوف
. What is meant by good attitude is doing favours
, وَكَفّ الْأَذَى , وَطَلَاقَة الْوَجْه
and refraining from harming others, and being cheerful

هُوَ مُخَالَطَة النَّاس بِالْجَمِيلِ وَالْبِشْر ،
It means mixing with people in a kind and cheerful manner,

وَالتَّوَدُّد لَهُمْ ، وَالْإِشْفَاق عَلَيْهِمْ , وَاحْتِمَالهمْ
being friendly towards them and caring for them, putting up with them,

، وَالْحِلْم عَنْهُمْ ,
being forbearing towards them,

وَالصَّبْر عَلَيْهِمْ فِي الْمَكَارِه ،
showing patience towards them at times of difficulty,

وَتَرْك الْكِبْر وَالِاسْتِطَالَة عَلَيْهِمْ ،

not being arrogant towards them,

وَمُجَانَبَة الْغِلَظ وَالْغَضَب ، وَالْمُؤَاخَذَة
avoiding being harsh and angry, and not rebuking or blaming them

فما عزمت عليه وشرعت فيه من معاودة الابتسامة ،
Whatever you do of smiling,

واستعادة الثقة ، وحسن العشرة
feeling confident, being kind,

، وحضور الدعابة ، والاختلاط بالناس

having a sense of humour and mixing with people,

، في حدود الشرع ،.

within the limits and framework prescribed by Islam,

بغير إفراط ولا تفريط
without going to either extreme

، مع استصحاب النية في ذلك لدعوتهم
, whilst bearing in mind that the intention behind that is to call them to Allah,

ونصحهم وأمرهم بالمعروف ونهيهم عن المنكر :
advise them, enjoin them to do what is right and forbid them to do what is wrong,

سداد في الرأي ، وحكمة في التعامل ،
is a wise thing to do and the best way of dealing with them;
وخطوة جادة في طريق الدعوة
it is a step in the right direction with regard to da‘wah

ومن تحلى بخلق أهل الإسلام .
Whoever acquires the characteristics of the people of Islam,
،
فخالق الناس بخلق حسن ، وخالطهم ،
and treats people kindly, mixes with them

وتقرب إليهم ، يفعل ذلك ابتغاء وجه الله ،
and tries to get close to them, doing all of that for the sake of Allah

، فهو مأجور من جهتين :

will be rewarded on two counts,

من جهة التحلي بالخلق الحسن ، ومن جهة التقرب إلى الناس
for acquiring good characteristics and for seeking to draw close to people

لا ليصيب منها عرضا ، أو يقضي منها وطرا
without any ulterior motive or desire to seek worldly gain

لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا،
Do not regard any act of kindness as insignificant,
وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَلْقٍ
even meeting your brother with a cheerful countenance.
فهذا من الغبطة
this is ghibtah (envy that is free from malice);
إلا إذا تمنى أن تزول عنهم النعمة
if he wishes that the blessing would be taken away from them,
يجاهد نفسه حتى يصفو قلبه لإخوانه المسلمين
The Muslim needs to strive against his own self so that his heart will be free of jealousy towards his Muslim brothers.
زالت كثير من هذه المشكلات التي يعاني منها
most of these problems from which he is suffering will disappear.
وحين يعلم المسلم ما له من الفضل والمنزلة
When the Muslim realizes how great his virtue and status will be
فإن ذلك سوف يدفعه إلى الإحسان إليهم بكل سبيل
this will motivate him to treat them well in all ways,
( ذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء )
“That is the Grace of Allaah which He bestows on whom He wills
ليتخذ بعضهم بعضاً سخرياً
so that some may employ others in their work
والحسد ضرره عظيم في الدنيا والآخرة
destructive jealousy causes a great deal of harm in this world and in the Hereafter
دبَّ إليكم داء الأمم قبلكم الحسد والبغضاء
There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred
أفشوا السلام بينكم
Spread (the greeting of) salaam amongst yourselves.
وتريد الحلول لهذه الخصلة الذميمة
and that you want to rid yourself of this blameworthy characteristic.
دعاء الله والتضرع إليه أن يزيل عنك هذا الداء
supplication to Allaah and ask Him to rid you of this problem.
واسلل سخيمة صدري
and remove ill will from my breast
أي أخرج غشَّه وغلَّه وحقده
means take away all insincerity, rancour and hatred.
( إن الحسنات يذهبن السيئات )
“Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds
فإن لكل إنسان نصيب من الحسد
Every person has his or her share of destructive envy
ما خلا جسد من حسد ، فالكريم يخفيه واللئيم يبديه
Nobody is free from destructive envy, but the noble person hides it whilst the base person shows it.
عندما التزمت أصبحت جاداً جداً
When I first came close to my religion,
، وأشعر أن الناس انفضوا من حولي
and I felt that people that were close to me, got far.

المؤمن حسن الخلق ، طيب المعشر، لين الجانب ، باسم الوجه
The believer should be good-natured, treat others kindly, be gentle, be cheerful,

، يألف الناس ويألفونه ، يجدون في خصاله الحسنة
and feel at ease with people and they with him, so that they may see in his good qualities the attributes of

فلا هو بالفظ الغليظ ، ولا هو بالرخو السخيف
So he should be neither harsh and rough nor soft and foolish;

،
ولا يرضي الناس بسخط الله ،
he should not seek to please people by doing that which incurs the wrath of Allah,
ولا يخاف في الله لومة لائم ،
and he should not fear the blame of anyone for the sake of Allah.
لا تمنعه الاستقامة من الابتسامة
Righteousness should not prevent him from smiling

، ولا تحجزه عن الدعابة والطرفة المليحة ،
or having a sense of humour and the ability to joke,

ولا تدعوه إلى الاعتزال عن الناس وعدم مخالطتهم ،
and it should not prompt him to be isolated from people and refrain from mixing with them;

ولكنه يخالط الناس ويسلم عليهم ويبتسم إليهم ويصافحهم
rather he mixes with people, greets them, smiles at them, shakes hands with them,
ويمازحهم ويحسن معاشرتهم ،
jokes with them and treats them kindly,

فهو قريب من الناس غير بعيد عنهم ، .
So he is close to people and is not remote from them;
يعايشهم ، ويشاركهم أفراحهم وأحزانهم ،
he mixes with them and shares their joys and sorrows.
فتجده لأخيه المسلم أخا معينا ،
So you will find him to be a true brother who helps his Muslim brother,

وصاحبا وفيا ، وصديقا حميما ،
a sincere companion and close friend

يفرح لفرحه ، ويحزن لحزنه ، ،
who rejoices with him at times of joy and mourns with him at times of sorrow;


ويواسيه إذا أصابه مكروه
he consoles him if something bad befalls him.

فلا تجد أحدا هو أنفع للناس من المسلم
You will not find anyone who is more caring towards people than a Muslim

المتأدب بأدب الشريعة السمحة
who is following the noble teachings of Islam

الآداب الكريمة ، والأخلاق الحسنة ،
good attitude and good manners and behaviour.

نذكر منها طرفا يسيرا
We will mention a few examples below.

أَكْمَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِيمَانًا أَحَاسِنُهُمْ أَخْلَاقًا،
The most perfect of the believers in faith are those who are best in manners and attitude,

الْمُوَطَّئُونَ أَكْنَافًا، الَّذِينَ يَأْلَفُونَ وَيُؤْلَفُونَ،
who are humble, who feel at ease with people and people feel at ease with them
وَلَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَا يَأْلَفُ وَلَا يُؤْلَفُ
He is not one of us who does not feel at ease with people and they do not feel at ease with him

إِنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَسَعُوا النَّاسَ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ،
Verily you cannot afford to make people happy with your wealth,

وَلَكِنْ يَسَعُهُمْ مِنْكُمْ بَسْطُ الْوَجْهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ
but you can make them happy with you by means of a cheerful face and good attitude







وهذا لا يتنافى مع أن يحب لنفسه ما يحب للآخرين
This does not mean that he cannot like for himself what he likes for others
تصرفات الأطفال الصغار ليست مدعاة للخجل،
A toddler acting out is not shameful,
ولا سلوكًا يستحق العقاب،،
nor is it behavior that needs punishing.
بل صرخة للفت الانتباه
It’s a cry for attention,
أو صراخ استغاثة رغبةً في النوم،
a shout-out for sleep,

أو نداء ليتبع الأبوان طرقًا أكثر حزمًا،
or a call to action for firmer, .

أو لفرض حدودٍ أكثر اتساقًا.

إنه الشد والجذب الناتج من اختبار أطفالنا لمقدار نمو استقلاليتهم،
It is the push-pull of our toddler testing his burgeoning independence

فهم لديهم رغبة جامحة في تجاوز الحدود، »
. He has the overwhelming impulse to step out of bounds,
بينما يكونون في أمس الحاجة أيضًا لأن يعرفوا أنهم مُسيطرٌ عليهم بأمان. while also desperately needing to know he is securely reined in.
بالتأكيد لا شك في أن الأطفال بحاجة إلى الانضباط،
There is no question that children need discipline.

وكما تقول «ماجدة جربر» الخبيرة في تربية الأطفال،
As infant expert Magda Gerber said,

إن «قلة انضباط الأطفال ليس من قبيل العطف، بل الإهمال
“Lack of discipline is not kindness, it is neglect.”

One surefire way to feel lost and alone

هي السماح لأشخاص آخرين بأن يملوا عليك حياتك، ونسيان رغباتك وأحلامك الخاصة..
is to let other people dictate your life, and forget about your own wishes and dreams.

لا يمكن للأشخاص الآخرين أبدًا عيش حياتك بدلاً عنك
Other people can never live your life for you


أو معرفة ما يدور بداخل قلبك وروحك مثلك،
or know the inner workings of your heart and soul the way you do,


لذلك لا تدع أصواتهم تؤثر عليك.
so don’t let their voices drown out your own.
قف بشموخ وقوة مدافعًا عن وجهات نظرك،


Stand tall and strong in your viewpoints,

ولا تسمح للناس بالتدخل في حياتك.
and don’t allow people to walk all over you.

They can have an opinion, but it doesn’t have to determine the direction of your life

Men too often confound them: they should not be
confounded
يجب أن لا نتوهم المظهر حقيقة.
appearance should not be mistaken for truth;
والمذاهب البشرية الضيقة،
narrow human doctrines
تلك التي لا تنزع إلاً إلى تعظيم فئة قليلة وتبجيلها،
, that only tend to elate and magnify a few,
يجب أن لا تستبدل بعقيدة المسيح الفادية للعالم كله..
should not be substituted for the world-redeeming creed of Christ.
إنّ ثمة - وأكرر ذلك - لفرقاً
There is—I repeat it—a difference;
وإنه لعمل صالح، لا عمل طالح، أن نرسم في وضوح بالغ
and it is a good, and not a bad action to mark broadly and clearly

قد لا يرتاح الناس إلى رؤية هذه الآراء يُنزل بها الأذى،
The world may not like to see these ideas dissevered,
ذلك بأنهم تعوّدوا أن يؤالفوا ما بينها
for it has been accustomed to blend them;
واجدين من المناسب أن يعتبروا المظهر الخارجي شيئاً أصيلاً ينطوي على قيمة حقيقية،
finding it convenient to make external show pass for
sterling worth
إنهم قد يكرهون ذلك الذي
يجرؤ على فحص الأشياء والكشف عن حقيقتها،
It may hate him who dares to scrutinise and expose—
إلاّ فليبغضوه ما شاؤوا.
but hate as it will,
إنهم يظلون برغم ذلك مدينين له
it is indebted to him
إنّ التقاليدية شيء والأخلاقية شيء آخر،
Conventionality is not morality
والرياء ليس هو الدين.
Self-righteousness is not religion.
ومهاجمة الأول لا تعني شنّ حملة على الآخر.
To attack
the first is not to assail the last.
إنّ نزع القناع عن وجه الفريسي لا يعني أنك ترفع يداً كافرة إلى متاج الأشواكه".
To pluck the mask from the face of the Pharisee,
is not to lift an impious hand to the Crown of Thorns
إنّ هذه الأشياء والأعمال لَعَلَى طرفي نقيض.
These things and deeds are diametrically opposed
إنها لتتمايز تمايز الرذيلة عن الفضيلة
: they are as distinct as is vice from virtue.
والذين تكشف آذانهم في كل احتجاج على التعصّب
whose ears detect in each protest against bigotry
إهانة للورع، الذي هو نائب الله على الأرض.
an insult to piety, that regent of God on earth
إني أحب أن أنبّه أمثال هؤلاء المتشككين إلى بعض الفروق الواضحة
I would suggest to such doubters certain obvious distinctions;
- أحب أن أذكرهم ببعض الحقائق البسيطة .
I would remind them of certain simple truths
على قدر ما أعلم ولكن هذا لا يدعو إلى إغفالها البتة.
so far as I know, but not, therefore, to be overlooked
أعني أولئك النفر القلائل المروعي الفؤاد أو المولعين بالتنقيب عن المزالق ، الذين يرتابون في نزعة كل كتاب من مثل «جين ايير،
I mean the timorous or carping few who doubt the tendency of such books as “Jane Eyre:”
والذين يبدو كل ما هو غير مألوف شيئاً غير صحيح في أعينهم
in whose eyes whatever is unusual is wrong
حتى إذا أديت واجب الشكر إلى أولئك الذين طوقوا عنقي بعونهم وتزكيتهم
Having thus acknowledged what I owe those who have
aided and approved me,

أمّا ناشر قصتى هذه فهو كائن راهن محدد

ألم تعاشر هذا الزوج بعلاَّته ربع قرن من الزمان
Had she not lived with this husband and his shortcomings for a quarter century
فجنت من معاشرته أبناءهم قرة عينيها
and been rewarded by children who were the
apples of her eye,
وبيتًا مترعًا بالخير والبركة
a home amply provided with comforts and blessings,
وحياة ناضجة سعيدة.
and a happy, adult life

بلى،
Of course she had.
أما مخالطة العفاريت فقد مرت كما تمر كل ليلة بسلام
Being surrounded by the jinn had been
bearable, just as each evening was bearable
وما امتدت يد أحدهم إليها أو إلى أحد من أبنائها بسوء
None of them had attempted to hurt her or the children
اللهم إلا ما هو بالمزاح والمداعبات أشبه، فلا وجه للشكوى،
They had only played some harmless pranks to tease her
ولكن الحمد كل الحمد لله الذى بكلامه.
Praise God, the merit was all God's.
اطمأن قلبها وبرحمته استقامت حياتها
He calmed her heart and with His mercy brought order to her life
ولكنها لم تكن تعرف الطمأنينة الحقة حتى يعود الغائب،
But her mind was never completely at rest until her
husband returned
أجل كان مجرد وجوده بالبيت ـ صاحيًا أو نائما ـ كفيلاً ببث السلام فى نفسها، Indeed, the mere fact of his presence in the house, whether awake or asleep, was enough to make her feel secure.

وقد خطر لها مرة،
It had occurred to her once,
، أن تعلن نوعًا من الاعتراض المؤدب على سهره المتواصل
to venture a polite objection to his repeated nights out
فما كان منه إلا أن أمسك بأذنيها
His response had been to seize her by the ears
وقال لها بصوته الجهوري فى لهجة حازمة
and tell her peremptorily in a loud voice,

أنا رجل، الآمر الناهى،
"I'm a man. I'm the one who commands and forbids
لا أقبل على سلوكى أية ملاحظة،
I will not accept any criticism of my behavior
وما عليك إلا الطاعة،
All I ask of you is to obey me
فحاذرى أن تدفعينى إلى تأديبك
Don't force me to discipline you
إلا أن يحمِّر لها عين الغضب،
in order to escape the glare of his wrathful eye
فعليها الطاعة بلا قيد ولا شرط،
It was her duty to obey him without reservation or condition
وقد أطاعت، وتفانت فى الطاعة
She yielded so wholeheartedly
حتى كرهت أن تلومه على سهره ولو فى سرَّها،
that she even disliked blaming him privately for his nights out
ووقر فى نفسها أن الرجولة الحقّة والاستبداد والسهر إلى ما بعد منتصف الليل
She became convinced that true manliness, tyranny, and staying out till after midnight
صفات متلازمة لجوهر واحد،
were common characteristics of a single entity

ثم انقلبت مع الأيام تباهى بما يصدر عنه
With the passage of time she grew proud of whatever he meted out,
سواء ما يسرها أو يحزنها

whether it pleased or saddened her
، وظلت على جميع الأحوال الزوجة المحبِّة المطيعة المستسلمة، .
No matter what happened, she remained a loving, obedient, and docile wife.
ولم تأسف يومًا على ما ارتضت لنفسها من السلامة والتسليم،
She had no regrets at all about reconciling herself to a type of security based on surrender
وإنها لتستعيد ذكريات حياتها فى أى وقت تشاء فلا يطالعها إلا الخير والغبطة،
Whenever she thought back over her life, only goodness and happiness came to mind
على حين تلوح لها المخاوف والأحزان كالأشباح الخاوية
Fears and sorrows seemed meaningless ghosts to her,
فلا تستحق إلا ابتسامة رثاء
worth nothing more than a smile of pity
ثم جاء الأبناء تباعا
Then the children arrived, one after the other
ولكنهم كانوا أول عهدهم بالدنيا لحما طريا
In their early days in the world,
though, they were tender sprouts
لا يبدد خوفا ولا يطمئن جانبًا،
unable to dispel her fears or reassure her
وعلى العكس ضاعف من خوفها بما أثار فى نفسها المتهافتة من إشفاق عليهم وجزع أن يمسهم سوء،
On the contrary, her fears were multiplied by her troubled soul's concern for them and her anxiety that they might be harmed.
فكانت تحويهم بذراعيها
She would hold them tight,
وتغمرهم بأنفاس العطف
lavish affection on them
وتحيطهم فى اليقظة والمنام
, and surround them, whether awake or asleep,
أما الطمأنينة الحقة فلم تكن لتذوقها .
True peace of mind she would not achieve
حتى يعود الغائب من سهرته
until her husband returned from his evening's entertainment.

ابعد عنا، ليس هذا مقامك،
Leave us alone. This isn't where you belong.
وعندما طالت بها معاشرة الأرواح بتقدم الزمن
Over the course of time as she gained more experience living with the spirits,
تخففت من مخاوفها كثيرًا
her fears diminished a good deal.
واطمأنت لدرجة إلى دعاباتهم التى لم تجر عليها سوءًا قط
She was calm enough to jest with them without being frightened
فكانت إذا ترامى إليها حس طائف منهم
If she happened to sense one of them prowling about,

قالت فى نبرات لا تخلو من دالة: «
she would say in an almost intimate tone,
ألا تحترم عباد الرحمن!.

"Have you no respect for those who worship God the Merciful?
الله بيننا وبينك فاذهب عنا مكرما
He will protect us from you, so do us the favor of going away

فبدا الطريق إلى يسارها ضيقًا ملتويًا
To her left, the street appeared narrow and

ولكى يطمئن قلبها

اعتادت أن تطوف بالحجرات

وتندس فى الفراش ولسانها لا يمسك عن التلاوة

ولشد ما كانت تخاف الليل فى عهدها الأول بهذا البيت،

هى التى عرفت عن عالم الجن أضعاف ما تعرفه عن عالم الإنس

far more about the world of the jinn than that of mankind

وأن الشياطين لا يمكن أن تضل طويلا عن هذه الحجرات القديمة الواسعة الخالية،

could not be lured away from these spacious, empty old rooms for long

ولعلها آوت إليها قبل أن تحمل هى إلى البيت،

ولكنه قاطعني في انفعال
But he interrupted passionately.

وتكشف جاكسون عن بلاهة صارخة

بسبب قامته الطويلة وجبهته اللامعة

وفمه الذي يرتسم عليه تعبير ساخر،

والتحديق في الركاب بارتباك وإحباط

بل لم يكن بجوارها من الأساس..
and he wasn’t anywhere nearby.


فلا معنى لهذه المزحة؛

فأثار به عاصفة من الثورة والفزع
stirring up a storm of outrage and indignation.
فردده فى البيت بحسن نية
and repeated innocently at
home,
متنفسا لعواطفه الثائرة المكبوتة
vented his stifled rebellious
feelings.
ولكنه كظمها تقديرًا للعواقب
but he suppressed it out of fear of the consequences.
فشقوا طريقهم فى صلف وكبرياء
They plowed through the younger boys pompously and haughtily,
التى لم تكن نادرة فى الواقع
which actually were plentiful,
. وكانت المرات التى سيق فيها إلى الاشتباك فى معركة نادرة جدا
He had only rarely been embroiled in a fight,
المتفرقة عن المدرسة
that branched out from the school.
تتحلق جماعات منهم الباعة المتجولين
bands of them encircled the roving vendors
الذين يسدون الطريق بزحمتهم
who blocked off the road with their flow.
ثم بسط راحتيه فى ضراعة «
he spread his hands out in entreaty.
. ولبث السيد مفكرا،
He was mulling over
ما ثار من جدل
the dispute that had flared up
هديتى لا تجاوز القصد
"The gift to me is not excessive
ـ أتغرينى باسترداد الهدية؟
Are you tempting me to withdraw the
gift?"
فتساءل السيد دهشًا:
The proprietor asked in astonishment,
سامحك الله،
"May God go easy on you.
إنى لا أتصوره غاضبا أو متجهما أبدا
being in any way spiteful or sullen.
وتحول السيد فجأة من الضيق إلى المرح :

The proprietor suddenly went from anxiety to gaiety,
كعادته
as was his wont,
فقال بأريحية
and
said expansively,
ـ يا له من دفاع فى سبيل الباطل!
"What a perverse defense!"
لا لأنه يهون عليه أن يكون متهما أمام الله
not because he shrugged off being accused before God,
فأرواها باللهو
and quenched in play.
، وآخاه فى السلام.
He communed peacefully with Him
غير مثقل الضمير بإحساس خطيئة
was not weighed down by guilty feelings
يهش للمأكل الفاخر
He delighted in fancy food.
وبتلك الحيوية الفياضة المشبوبة
With the same ardent, overflowing vitality
يستبق القوم إلى الرى من منهله العذب
People vied to enjoy
the pleasures of his friendship.
وقلب عامر بحب الناس
a heart abounding in love for people,
بقلب طيب وسريرة نقية
he was good-hearted
التى تراوح بين العبادة والفساد
wavering between piety and
depravity.
ولم يزل يتمتع بحيوية فياضة مشبوبة لا يتأثر بها
and still enjoyed an ardent and
exuberant vigor
لم يتراخ توثبه للحياة
his zest for life had not
diminished
مع تقدم العمر
as he grew older.
مستغرقا فيه بكليته،
submerging himself totally in it
في ظِل عنايةٍ شديدة.
under careful tending.
مضى زديج في طريقه هائمًا
beat his March at random.
دهشين سعداء لمحضره
they were surprized, though charmed to see him
ارتفع بينهم ضجيج مختلط

وكان القلق ينهب نفسها نهبًا

فتنازعها الخوف والرجاء
between Hope and Despair.

No Eye was satisfied with gazing at him
، وقد خرج عن طوره كرجلٍ سقطت الصاعقة منه غير بعيد
as one beside himself, and perfectly thunder-struck,
وصافحه الآخران مكررين له العزاء،
The others shook hands with him, repeating their
condolences.
ثم ذهبوا جميعا..
Then they all depaned.
أسند رأسه إلى راحته وهو يغمض عينيه
He leaned his head on his hand
وهو يعزيه بنبرات باكية
offering
his condolences in a sobbing voice,


ولكنه بدا ضيق الصدر بالتعزية،
but he seemed distressed by kind
words.
ولم يعد يحتمل البقاء
He could not bear to stay there.

فزايل موضعه
He left his seat

يسير بخطى بطيئة ثقيلة حتى غادر الدكان،

and moved
slowly out of the store, walking with heavy steps.

ينبغى أن يخرج من حيرته
He had to get over
his bewilderment.

سينقلب البيت جحيما بعد دقيقة أو دقيقتين
The house would turn into an inferno in
a minute or two.

وسيلحق به الأصدقاء
His friends would rally round him

فلا يدعون له فرصة للتفكير

.. متى يتأمل الخسارة التى منى بها..
When would he ponder the loss he had undergone?

يبدو هذا بعيدا..
That seemed a long way off,
ولكنه آت لا ريب فيه
but it would no doubt come.

وهذا قصارى ما يجد من عزاء فى راهنه
It was the
most consolation he could hope for at present.

أجل سيأتى وقت يخلو فيه إلى نفسه
Yes, a time would
come when he would be all alone
ويفرغ إلى حزنه بكل كيانه
and could devote himself to his
sorrow with all his soul.

أطوار حياته كلها من طفولته وصباه إلى ريق شبابه،
all the stages from childhood to
the prime of his youth,

ما أثار من آمال
the hopes he had aroused
وما خلف من ذكريات
and the memories

مطلقا لدموعه العنان حتى يستنفدها عن آخرها

حقا أن أمامه فسحة من الوقت يحسد عليها ،

and once their feet were wet
كانوا لا يبالون بعد ذلك بموطئها

So they would jump into the water

شأنهم شأن معظم الأطفال آنذاك

to be faithful to our trusts,

ونأتى الفواحش،
we lived in unchastity,

أيها الملك كنا قومًا أهل جاهلية
O king! we were plunged in the depth of ignorance

عز على المشركين أن يجد المهاجرون مأمنا لأنفسهم ودينهم
Quraish could not tolerate the prospect of a secure haven available for the Muslims

بُهت الصبي
the lad was dumbfounded,
وظهر عليه الوجوم
and his discomfiture was apparent.
وانصرف إلى عبثه ولعبه،
and go off to games and amusement
ويذهب إلى المحكمة متثاقلًا متباطئًا،
and go to the Law Courts sluggishly, dawdling as he went
ثم فترت همته
and then his energy abated.
التي يعبر بها الناس عن الاستحسان
which people use to express approval
أصلح من هذا الغرور
he rectified this self-deceit
أقبل يعاتبه عتابًا شديدًا،
and reproached him severely.
اغترَّ وأخذه الكبر
he became conceited and overtaken by pride
من تواضع لله
He who humbles himself before God
قرأ القاضي هذه الأبيات بصوت يحطِمه البكاء حَطمًا
read this in a voice broken with sobs
مُستوجِبٌ ثنائيَ الجميلا
And deserves my hearty thanks
وهو بِسَبْقٍ حائزٌ تفضيلا
But he being a pioneer has merit,
فائقةً ألفيَّةَ ابنِ مُعطي
It surpasses the Alfiyya of Ibn M u'ty
وتَقتَضِي رِضًا بغير سُخطٍ
It induces satisfaction without resentment
ويملأه تواضعًا
and fill him with humility
يُؤثِّر في نفس الصبي
make a great impression on the lad
الذي لم يكن يخلو من هيبة
not devoid of awe
وكيف لا يبتهج
How should he not rejoice,
وأشبه بفتاة ساذجة
and her resemblance to a guileless girl
بعينين خضراوين لامعتين تميل إلى الصفرة
—in her shimmering yellow-green eyes
ولكن فلورا — التي لم يكن من عادة كارلا أن تقيِّدها قط

يرسل الطلاق والأيمان إرسالًا

تعلَّم الصبيُّ الاحتياط في اللفظ

He returned, much to his disgust, calculating what he would meet
لكن هذه السعادة لم تدم إلا ريثما يَعقبها شقاء شنيع؛
But this happiness was to be followed by bitter disillusionment

and felt a certain superiority over his friends
كان يجد في التحدث بها شفاءً لنفسه،
thereby easing his own feelings
ولذة لهؤلاء الصبيان
providing pleasure for the boys
وأخذ يلعنهما أمام الصبيان ،

So he gave his tongue full rein

وأخذ يُظهر من عيوبهما وسيئاتهما ،
He began to expose such of their faults and
mis-doings
وانقطع الصبيُّ عن الكُتَّاب
So the lad ceased going to the school
وعُنى به أثناء الغداء عنايةً خاصة،
and paid special attention to him
قال أبوه هذه الجملة في مزاحٍ قاسٍ
his father
said to him a sentence in cruel jest
حتى أنس الصبيُّ إليه، وانطلق وجهه بعد عبوسه.
and began to cheer up after his sulkiness
فما زال يكلمه في دعابة
and began to talk to him good-humouredly,
فانصرف كئيبًا محزونًا
and took his departure very despondently
وإنما هو لعبٌ وعبثٌ!
to play and idle away his time
وإنما ابتدره بهذا السؤال
forestalled him with this question
حتى انتهت به إلى زاوية من زوايا المطبخ، فألقته فيها إلقاءً،

وقد زعمت أنك مازلت تحفظ القرآن!
You averred that you still knew the Quran properly
قال الشيخ في هدوء وسخرية
said gently and mockingly,
فإذا استقرَّ به مكانه،
When he had settled down in his place
فيسرع إلى إجابته
and he hastened in response.
فلا يحفل الشيخ بهذا الجواب
paid no attention to this reply
ثم يهمل الصبي حينًا
and took no
notice of the lad
ولكن ذلك لم يَرُعْه،.
that did not alarm him
فكثيرًا ما مشي حافيًا
as he often walked barefoot

ويؤمنون به إيمانًا شديدًا.
in which they believed implicitly.
يستطيعون أن يروا النبيَّ فيما يرى النائم
were able to see the
Prophet in dreams;
لقد رأيته بعَيْنَيْ رأسي هذا.
I have seen him with my
own eyes
راكبًا بغلته
riding his she-mule.”
والله ما هكذا كان الأمل فيك يا غزالي!
“I thought better of you, O Ghazzaly!
فإذا هي تعدو من ورائي عَدْوًا
she actually ran after me,
فإذا هي قائمة تسعى
she
was standing up and walking
فليس لي بكما شأن.
I have no concern with either of you
وخلِّ بينها وبين جَدِّها
leave her there with her grandfather
ويجد في ذلك من المشقة والعناء الشيء الكثير
he found this so irksome and troublesome
فانحطم ظهرها انحطامًا،
and her back was badly broken
فلما فرغوا من الحج
Now when they had accomplished the pilgrimage
وانصرفوا إلى المدينة
and had gone on to Medina
يجدان لذةً في أن يتحدَّثا إلى أبنائهما
took great delight in talking to their children,
يمكِّنها من الفخر ،
it enabled them to boast,
ورفع الرأس
hold up their heads
ومناوأة الأشباه والنظائر
and outdo their neighbours.
كانت شرًّا لا بدَّ منه،
In fact it was an ineluctable evil,
جرت به العادة
established by custom
وصادف هوًى في الناس
and meeting the desire of the people.
شيئًا ترغب فيه الأسرة رغبة شديدة
something which the family heartily desired
؛ يأخذ في هذه المرة بساطًا
At one time he would take a carpet
شيئًا راقه وأعجبه
anything that took his fancy and pleased him
لا يُلِمُّ بهذه الأسرة
never descended upon this family
إلا ارتحل من غده
without staying until the following day
ما لا بُدَّ منه من الضأن والمعز،
what was necessary in the way of lambs and goats.
هذه الأسرة التي كانت تعيش من سَعة
this family which lived comfortably
لا تكاد تُمسك لسانها إلا في مشقة وعناء؛
she managed to bridle her tongue only with the greatest
difficulty.
وتستثقل ظلَّه
and found
his presence unbearable.
وكان من أشد الناس مقتًا له
The person who loathed him most
ومن أشد الناس سخطًا عليه
and was most indignant about him
فقد كان طمع الشيخ وحرصه .
the greediness and covetousness of the sheikh were
من له حظٌّ من أناة
anybody with the
slightest degree of discrimination
لم يكن خالصًا من الشك والازدراء
was not free from doubt and contempt.
وتذاكرتِ الأسرة ما كان من أمره،
the family talked about
him
وأظهر أبو الصبيِّ تأثيرًا وفزعًا،
The lad's father at first showed agitation and consternation,
ثم أظهر اطمئنانًا وهدوءًا
but
later appeared more confident and tranquil
مصدر شؤم لا يشبهه شؤم
was a source of bad luck without parallel.
وإذا الشيخ قد ثار وفار،
Forthwith the sheikh got excited and boiled
وأرغى وأَزْبَد
and foamed and frothed,
وصاح بملء صوته
crying at the top
of his voice,
ثم تنبث في أجسامهم رِعدة
Then a shudder runs through their bodies
فإذا هم جميعًا وقوف
and lo ! they are all standing
ثم يُنصَب المجلس
and then the assembly was
held.
مُدَّت الموائد
the tables were laid
سيكون لابنه شأن
his son was destined to become
great.
وَكَانَ فَضْلُ اللهِ عَلَيْكَ عَظِيمًا،
the grace of God was mighty upon you
يذهبون في فهمها وتأويلها المذاهب.
that they could interpret pretty much as they liked.
ومنهم من يسأله حاجة
and others asking him about some affair
وينصرف خاشعًا،
and going away meekly
وهم يتقاطرون عليه
and they flocked to him
والشيخ عنهم في شغل
But the sheikh was too
preoccupied to heed them.
يستبقون ويختصمون
vie with one another and quarrel
انصرفوا عنه
they went away
يأتمرون أمرَه
carrying out his behests.
ومن حوله أصفياؤه وأولياؤه
surrounded by his chosen friends and devotees
وإذا هم إلى طعامهم
and soon they fell upon their food
في شرَه لا يعدِله شرَه
with a gluttony that was almost unbelievable.
وإذا السُّمُط ممدودَةٌ في الشارع
and tables laid out in the street
حيث لخصومهم شيء من القوة.
where their opponents were at all powerful.
ينزلون ويرحلون،
they alighted and mounted
في أبَّهة وضخامة
in strength and magnificence,
حيث لا سلطان إلا لهم
where they alone held sway,
وإنما كان يتَّخذ الجياد والبغال والحمير،
but instead he mounted on
horses, mules and asses.
فليس ينحطُّ عنها إلا قليلًا.
fell not far short of it
وأقدر على الكيد واللؤم، .
and Had a greater capacity for trickery and
rapacity
وأنهض للخصومة،
and arousing animosities.
كان أقرب من أبيه إلى الدنيا،
Moreover he was nearer to
worldly things than his father
وأبعد من أبيه عن الدين
and farther removed from the
things of religion
وحَواريِّيه المقربين إليه
and intimate disciples.
أخذ عنه العهد
and had taken the oath of allegiance to him
ولله ما كان يحدث من الخصومات حين
And Ye Gods!
what animosities were aroused when
ولا يأبَون على أنفسهم الهجرة من قريةٍ إلى قرية
and think
nothing of migrating from village to village
وفرَّقوا أهواءهم تفريقًا عظيمًا،
and divided their affections to a very great degree.
وكانت المنافسة حادةً
There was acute rivalry
قد تقسَّموا الناس فيما بينهم فجعلوهم شيعًا،
split up the people between them into schisms
مُنْبَثِّين في أقطار الأرض،
scattered throughout the regions of the land.
لا تكاد تخلو منهم المدينة أسبوعًا
The
town was scarcely ever free from them.
وحسبنا الإشارة إلى بعض
It is sufficient for us to mention some of the
فمثل هذا يحتاج لسِفْرٍ كبير ،
doing so would require a large volume
ولا يسعنا ذكر ذلك البديل
We do not have room here to list all the changes
وأبدلهم خيراً منها
and replaced them with something better
وَلَمْ تَمَسَّ طِيبًا
and she would not put on perfume
دَخَلَتْ حِفْشًا
she would go into a hut
، وَلَبِسَتْ شَرَّ ثِيَابِهَا
and wear her worst clothes,
وَإِنْ عَزَمُوا الطَّلاقَ
And if they decide on divorce
ولو عظم
even if it was great;
فلا نصيب لها فيما يتركه ولدها
have no share of whatever wealth her son left behind
تُحرم من الميراث مطلقاً
would be deprived of inheritance altogether
ونقطع الأرحام
severing ties of kinship,
ونأتي الفواحش
committing abominations
ونسيء الجوار
treating neighbours badly
كانوا يتعاملون بالربا
They used to deal in usury
أَهْوَنَ عَلَى اللَّهِ
more insignificant before Allah
إِنَّمَا هُمْ فَحْمٌ مِنْ فَحْمِ جَهَنَّمَ
who are no more than the coal of Hell
الْجِعْلاَنِ الَّتِى تَدْفَعُ بِأَنْفِهَا النَّتْنَ
the beetle that rolls dung with its nose
مُؤْمِنٌ تَقِىٌّ ،
a righteous believer
وَفَاجِرٌ شَقِىٌّ
or a doomed evildoer.
كان عندهم الفخر بالآباء والنسب
They felt pride in their forefathers and lineage,
يَتَوَارَى مِنَ الْقَوْمِ
He hides himself from the people
مِنْ سُوءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِ
because of the ill of which he has been informed.
أَيُمْسِكُهُ عَلَى هُونٍ
Should he keep it in humiliation?
أَمْ يَدُسُّهُ فِي التُّرَابِ
or bury it in the ground?
أَلا سَاءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
Unquestionably, evil is what they decide
ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدّاً
his face becomes dark,
وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ
and he suppresses grief.
إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْئاً كَبِيراً
Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin”
وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلاقٍ
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty.
نَحْنُ نَرْزُقُكُمْ وَإِيَّاهُمْ
We will provide for you and them”
وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلادَكُمْ مِنْ إِمْلاقٍ
and do not kill your children out of poverty;
وجلب العار لهم
thus bringing shame upon them.
خشية وقوعهن في الأسر ،
for fear that they would be taken captive,
وبسبب خوفهم من الوقوع في الفقر
or because they feared falling into poverty.
بسبب ما هم فيه من فقر
because of the poverty they were suffering
هَدَمَ نِكَاحَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ
he abolished all those kinds of marriage
وَهُنَّ الْبَغَايَا
Those were the prostitutes,
كُنَّ يَنْصِبْنَ عَلَى أَبْوَابِهِنَّ رَايَاتٍ
who used to put flags at their doors
قَدْ عَرَفْتُمْ الَّذِي كَانَ مِنْ أَمْرِكُمْ
You know what you have done
يَجْتَمِعُ الرَّهْطُ مَا دُونَ الْعَشَرَةِ
a group of men, less than ten, would get together
أَرْسِلِي إِلَى فُلَانٍ فَاسْتَبْضِعِي مِنْهُ
Send for So-and-so and have relations with him.
إِذَا طَهُرَتْ مِنْ طَمْثِهَا
when she became pure following her menses
وكان الزنا منتشراً بينهم
fornication was widespread among them
كانوا لا يتنزهون عن الخبائث
They did not refrain from eating unclean things
أن ناقة وطئت بيضة
a she-camel that stepped on the egg of a lark
وتُسبى النساء والأطفال
and the women and children taken captive.
لأتفه الأسباب
for the most trivial of reasons
ضاق صدره
he would feel anxious
وكانوا يتشاءمون
They believed in evil omens
أحجم عن أمره !
he would cancel his plans
مضى في أمره
he would go ahead with his plans
وكانوا يتطيرون
They used to seek omens,
ويعظمونها التعظيم كله
and venerate them completely.
يتمثل في مظاهر كثيرة
was manifested in many ways;
خير أمة أخرجت للناس .
the best nation that was ever brought forth for humanity.
عقله الذي لم يخل من اضطراب
his mind which was not free from confusion
ما أحسب إلا أنه عمل عملًا غير قليل
I can only reckon that it made no small contribution
وإن أصابه شر
and if evil befalls him
انكفأ على وجهه
he tumbles forward on his face
خلقكم كالثيران لا تعقلون شيئًا!
created you like oxen so that you do not
understand anything
والذين كانوا يتَّصلون بدهماء الناس
and came in contact with the common people
لا قيمة له ولا مكانة.
of no importance.
وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيرًا
and they will be exposed to a burning flame
وأثرَى على حساب الضعفاء،
and had become rich at the expense of the
weak.
أكل أموال اليتامَى
he had devoured the wealth of orphans
ينقُل للناس بضائعهم وأمتعتهم
carrying people's goods and chattels
الذي كان في أول أمره حمَّارًا
who had commenced life as a
donkey-boy
والذي كان يزدري العلماء جميعًا؛
and despised the whole company of the ulema
كان الناس مجمعين على وصفه بالبخل والشحِّ
The general opinion about him was that
he was miserly and mean.
متواضعًا غير تيَّاه ولا فخور
humbly and without boasting or bragging.
، ولم يكن يحفِل به إلا الأقلُّون عددًا.
But except for a few, they did
not pay any attention to him
ولم يكن ينقطع للعلم
he did not devote himself to learning
ولا يتَّخذه حرفة
nor did he take it as a vocation.
وكأنه كان يرى في نفسه شيئًا من
الوَلاية
as though he perceived in himself some saintly power.
وكان معروفا بالتقى والورع،
He was well known for his piety and godliness
يذهب الناس في إكباره وإجلاله إلى حدٍّ يشبه التقديس
and people went to such lengths of admiration and
glorification as almost to canonise him
وأخذت تُلقي فيه ضروبًا من البخور،
and began to throw on top various
kinds of incense.
وكان أبوه ينتظر هذه الساعة أشدَّ ما يكون إليها شوقًا، '
وأعظم ما يكون بها ابتهاجًا
had been looking forward to this hour with the
greatest pleasure and anticipation
وتلا الخُطبة على أبيه غير مرة،
read the sermon to his father more than once.
أجهد نفسه في حفظ الخُطبة
had taken great pains to learn the
sermon
وكادت تقع بينهم الفتنة
they were on the point of breaking out into strife,
ولئن خُلِّيت بينه وبين المنبر والصلاة لأنصرفنَّ.
If you allow him access to the
pulpit, I shall go
فغاظه أن يُنتخب هذا الفتى خليفة دونه
it annoyed him that this
young man had been elected caliph instead of him.
إنما يقول ما يقول، ويأتي ما يأتي من الأمر
said what he said and
did what he did
متأثرًا بالحقد والمَوْجِدة
under the influence of spite and anger.
فكان ذلك يغيظه
This used to annoy him
ويحنقه على خصومه
and enrage him against his
opponents
فخر بأخيه،
boasting about his
brother
وذم القاضي
and running down the judge
قضى فيه ما شاء أن يقضي من السنين
He had spent as many years as he had wished there
ضخمًا،
bulky man
غليظ الصوت جَهْوَريَّه
with a rough
but sonorous voice.
يمتلئ شِدقُه بالألفاظ حين يتكلم
He filled the sides of his mouth with his
words when he spoke
فلم يُوَفَّق
but in vain
فيأخذه شيء من الإعجاب والدَّهَش
admiration and wonder seized him
مع شيء من الإكبار مؤثِّر جذَّاب
with an esteem that fascinates and attracts.
في جلال ومهابة
in an atmosphere of majesty and respect.
لا يحفل بهم أحد، أو لا يكاد يحفل بهم أحد
no one takes much notice of them
وليس في هذا شيء من العجب ولا من الغرابة
Nor is there any great cause for marvel or astonishment at that

إِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ عَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ
Verily Firawn exalted himself in the earth
Indeed Pharaoh tyrannized over the land
The Pharaoh turned into an arrogant tyrant in the land
Pharaoh behaved arrogantly in (his) land
Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land
وَجَعَلَ أَهْلَهَا شِيَعًا
and made its people into parties
reducing its people to factions
and divided its people into castes
and made its people subservient to him
He divided its inhabitants into parties
and broke up its people into sections
وبخلًا بالدماء على أن تراق
in the desire to avoid bloodshed
وثارت بينهم فتنة منكرة
and a negative partisanship arose
جعلت بأسهم بينهم شديدًا
which generated serious loss of morale among them
يجهرون في غير تحفظ
had no reservations about openly
بدعائهم ذاك البغيض
proclaiming their miserable rallying cry
وقد بلغ الشر أقصاه بين الفريقين
This evil state of affairs between the two parties ran on unchecked
وتبغض أصحابه أشد البغض وأنكره
hated his colleagues quite fiercely
وَيَسْتَحْيِي نِسَاءهُمْ
and letting their women live
and sparing their women
and letting live their womenfolk
إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ
Surely he was one of the mischief makers
Verify he was of the corrupters
for he was indeed a tyrant
he was indeed very mischievous
Infact he was of the evil doers
surely he was one of the mischiefmakers
He was certainly an evil-doer
قد كان أبيًّا كريمًا
he had acquitted himself with dignity and honour
ولم يقبل منهم الدَّنيَّة،
and in no way surrendering the
right of his country
وعاد أشم مرفوع الرأس
or emerging with no dishonour
ويصاب صاحبنا ببعض الأذى،
he was then in some trouble and
ولولا أن رفيقه كان ماهرًا لبقًا
but for a nimble friend,
لتعرَّض لشرٍّ كثيرٍ
would have been
in dire straits
موفورًا مكدودًا مع ذلك
in an exhausted condition, but still whole
مَّا كَانُوا يَحْذَرُونَ
that which they dreaded
that of which they were apprehensive
فَأَلْقِيهِ فِي الْيَمِّ
then cast him into the river
cast him into the sea
قُرّةُ عَيْنٍ لِي وَلَكِ
a joy of the eye for me and for you
a comfort to me and to you
لَوْلَا أَن رَّبَطْنَا عَلَى قَلْبِهَا
had We not fortified her heart
had We not strengthened her heart
ويلح في قبول استقالته
and insisted on resigning
إهانة للوطن كله
an affront to the whole nation
ولكن العصا لا تلبث أن تنشق
But dissension soon re-asserted its way
والخلاف لا يلبث أن يعود كأعنف ما كان
and quarrels began again as fiercely as ever
وشيء خير من لا شيء
and something is always better than nothing
ولا تزداد ناره إلا اضطرامًا
and grew in intensity
والخلاف يمضي في طريقه لا تهدأ ثورته
The controversy continued unabated
إِن كَادَتْ لَتُبْدِي بِهِ
She would have almost disclosed it
and she had wellnigh disclosed him
and indeed she was about to divulge it
لَتَنُوءُ بِالْعُصْبَةِ أُولِي الْقُوَّةِ
would burden a band of strong men
would have weighed down a band of strong men
proved heavy for a band of stalwarts
were too heavy a burden for a company of strong people
so many that a team of wrestlers could hardly lift their keys
لَا تَفْرَحْ
Do not exult
exult not
Do not boast!
Do not exult in your wealth
Do not be exultant
Do not show off
فَبَغَى عَلَيْهِمْ
Then he rampaged against them
then he behaved arrogantly toward them
but he bullied them
but he betrayed and oppressed them
but he began to oppress them
but he rose against them
he became insolent to them
but he acted insolently towards them
ليصلوا مع الإنجليز إلى كلمة سواء
to talk on equal terms with the British
وإنما يصانعون الإنجليز حينًا، ويصانعون القصر حينًا آخر
sometimes even working with the British, or with the
Palace
ويغامرون بحياتهم مغامرة رائعة
put their lives gallantly at stake
لا يحفلون بهم ولا بما يَلْقَوْنَ
showed themselves indifferent to popular suffering
ولا يخافون هولًا مهما يكن
in disregard of the consequences and of intimidation
وإنما كانوا يقدرون لأرجلهم مواضعها قبل الخطو
Rather, they watched their step, circumspectly
أمَرْتهمُو أمْرِي بمُنْعَرَجِ اللِّوى .. فلم يستبينوا الرُّشد إلا ضُحَى الغدِ
In the early dawn of day I gave them my direction
And they did not see how right it was until the morning after.
للجماعات التي يذهبون مذهبها أو يرون رأيها
and the communities within which they think
كان واهمًا في ذلك
He was fantastically wide of the mark
لن يحجم عن أداء الواجب
He had no hesitation about doing his duty unflinchingly
فلم تجنِ منه إلا شرًّا
reaping only evil
ويسلكوا به قصد السبيل
towards the goal ahead
والمضي في سبيل الرقيِّ
to keep pace with progress
وكان شديد التأثر بدروسهه
He was very deeply taken with him
يقدرون لها سلطانًا لا يزول
whose power had been considered impregnable.
وامتاز المنتصر من المنهزم
Victor and vanquished were now identified
وضعت الحرب أوزارها
The War had finally terminated
لاهيًا عما كان يجري حولي من الأحداث
in blissful ignorance of what was going on
around me
وضروبًا من الحلوى
and various kinds of
sweetmeats
ويتقاضون أثمانها دراهم
taking
in payment of them money
ورقًا أبيض صقيلًا
smooth white paper
أسرفوا في الأكل
they would stuff themselves with
food
يخالط فيها قلوبَ النساء شيء من الفرح والخوف
in which the hearts of women contained a mixture of joy and fear
واحتمل عنهم أوزارهم
and he bore their
sins for them
فصرف عن الناس هذا البلاء
He averted this disaster from the people
وتضرع المتضرعين
and the supplication of the suppliants
لولا أنْ لَطفَ اللهُ بالرضَّع
had not God shown kindness towards those giving suck
ألم ندعكم إلى تكذيب المنجمين؟
And did we not exhort
you to disbelieve the astrologers?
وجاءت الساعة المحتومة
and the appointed day came
أَزِفَتِ الْآزِفَةُ
The Day of Wrath is nigh
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ اللهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
and God alone can dispel it
دون أن تأتي عليها جميعًا
without destroying it in its
entirety
فيملأها عدلًا
and fill it with justice,
بعد أن ملئت جورًا
after it had been filled
with oppression.
وما كان للأرض أن تفنى قبل أن تظهر الدابة
For the world should not perish before The Beast
لا تكاد تستقرُّ قلوبهم بين جنوبهم
so that their hearts nearly burst from their sides
وكانوا يتحاورون في ذلك تحاوُرًا مُتَّصلًا
and they argued about it incessantly.
فكانوا هَلِعِين مروَّعين حقًّا
were thoroughly anxious
and alarmed
كلما تحدثوا بهذه النازلة
whenever they spoke
about this disaster
وإنما كانوا يشعرون بشيء من الرعب
They only felt some alarm
فلم يحفلوا بهذا أو لم يكادوا يحفلون به
paid little or no attention to it
فإذا هي هشيمٌ تذروه الرياح
it would become as chaff which is blown about by the winds.
دفع المكروه
warding off evils
واتِّقاء النكبات
and averting disasters.
الذي يزوّر التواقيع يساق إلى الموت
the forger was put to Death
ولم تكن الجرائم المتصلة بمصرف تلسون بأقلها شأناً.
and not least of all with Tellson's
في وحشية وضرواة
with brutality and ferocity
نجت من هولٍ فظيع
released from the horror
صناديقك الأخف ثقلاً
Your lighter boxes
وكانت أوراقك المالية ذات رائحة عفنة
Your bank-notes had a musty odour
أدراج خشبية بالية
يعشش فيها الدود
, wormy old wooden drawers,
وتتطاير ذرات منها نحو أنفك
particles of
which flew up your nose
وتنزلق في حنجرتك
and flew down your throat
في حياة ذهبت هدراً
on a misspent life,
وكأن الريح تعبث به
as if the wind rustled it,
ومن عجيب الأمر أنَّ الحاجات كانت
The strangest thing was that the requests were
أثيرٌ عند الله
he was preferred in the sight of God
رفيع المكانة عنده
and ranked
high in His estimation
وكان يستدين من حين إلى حين
he used to borrow from time to time
ويثقُلُ عليه أداء الدَّين
and the payment of the debt was a burden to him.
وإنما كان يُدفع إلى ذلك دفعًا،
but rather was driven to it
فيذعن إذعانًا سريعًا.
and then he would promptly submit
ويكلِّفه ما شاء من مشقة وعناء،
and used to put him to any amount of hardship and
trouble
فإن أبى أو أظهر الإباء
, and, if he refused or showed any signs of refusing
ولكنه لم يشأ أن يجيبه إليها
but was unwilling to grant it
حتى يَمْرُنَ على هذه الخلوة
until he had
practised solitude,
وكذلك فعل الصبي من غده
So the lad did this on the morrow
فامتلأ فرحًا وإعجابًا بصاحبه،،
and was filled with joy and
admiration of his friend.
هوِّن عليك؛
Take it easy
فقد أصابك الرعب
you were overcome with fright,
وملك الخوف عليك أمرك
and fear got the better of you
لقد دارت بي الأرض
Th e ground revolved about me,
حتى كدتُ أسقط،
so that I nearly fell down,
وانشقَّ الحائط
the wall split open
ثم أُغمي عليَّ،
After that I fainted
فخرجت مسرعًا
I rushed out with all speed
وبعد لَأْيٍ
After much trouble
أخذ صاحبنا يهدأ
he began to calm down
ويجيب في ألفاظ متقطعة،
and to reply in disjointed phrases
وبصوت متهدِّج
and in a hushed voice,
لا يجيب إلا مضطربًا مرتجفًا،
could only reply excitedly and tremblingly,
تصطك أسنانه اصطكاكًا،
and his teeth chattered so much
حتى روَّع رفيقه
that he terrified his companion
خرج من المنظرة مضطربًا
He rushed out of the room excitedly
ولا يكاد لسانه ينطلق بحرف واحد
while his tongue could hardly utter a word.
ولكنَّ شيئًا من ذلك لم يكن،
but nothing at all like that happened.
وما هي إلا أن اشتريا ضروبًا من الطيب
They bought all manner of incense
وينشقَّ أمامه الحائط
and the wall is cleft before him,
ملقيًا في النار شيئًا من الطيب
throwing some of the incense
into the fire
وهي أن يخلو الفتى إلى نفسه
the man must retire apart by
himself
ووضع بين يديه نارًا
and put in front of him a brazier
ومقدارًا من الطيب
and a quantity of incense.
فكان أشدَّ منه كلفًا بهذه العصا
and who was even keener on the wand than he was himself.
وما هي إلَّا أن
So what did they do but
جَدَّ الصَّبيَّانِ في البحث
concentrate all their
efforts on an investigation,
حتى انتهيا إلى وسيلة يسيرة
so that they might arrive at some
method
تمكِّنهما مما يريدان
which would enable them to get what they both so desired
فُتن الصبيُّ بهذه العصاد
The lad was fascinated by this wand,
ورغب في أن يظفر بها رغبة شديدة قوية
and so greatly desired to
get possession of it that
أرَّقت ليله
that he was sleepless at night
ونغصت يومه
and perturbed by
day
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ قَبْلَ الْحَسَنَةِ
They impatiently urge you to bring about evil before good
وَيُنشِئُ السَّحَابَ الثِّقَالَ
It is He who generates the heavy clouds.
And if you are astonished, then astonishing is their saying
فَأَمَّا الزَّبَدُ فَيَذْهَبُ جُفَاء ً وَأَمَّا مَا يَنفَعُ النَّاسَ فَيَمْكُثُ فِي الأَرْضِ
As for the foam, it passes away, and as for what benefits the people, it remains in the earth.
ويخرج منها تسعةُ نفرٍ .
and there came forth nine persons
يأتمرون أمر صاحب القضيب،
to carry out the behests of the possessor of the rod.
أقوياء خفاف ،
all-powerful and ethereal,
يطيرون ويعدون
who flew and run
ويحملون الأثقال،
carried heavy burdens,
ويقتلعون الجبال،
removed mountains
ويأتون من عجيب الأمر ما لا حدَّ له
and worked wonders without limit.
خبر ملأ الصبيَّ إعجابًا؛
something that filled the lad with admiration
والذي أوى إليه حسن البصري،
and whither Hassan of
Basra repaired.
كان يقوم من وراء الجبل
which stood behind the mountain
على عُمُدٍ شاهقة في الهواء
on lofty pillars in the air
ويظفر من الحياة بأحب لذاتها إليه.
and getting out of life the best of its pleasures
وكذلك كان الأمر في نفس صاحبنا
So it was in the heart of our friend.
ويأتون ما يأتيه السحرة من ضروب الفن
and produced all kinds of magic arts
ثم لا يلبثون أن يتجاوزوا القراءة والإعجاب
Then it was not long before they passed from reading
and admiration
وإذا هم يسلكون مناهج الصوفية،
And so they followed
out the Sufi practices
وما كان أبعد صبينا وأترابه عن ابن خلدون!
But nothing could be further from the minds of our lad and his companions than Ibn Khaldun
وينبئُ بما كان وما سيكون،
tell what happened in the past, and foretell the
future,
كما أنه يتعدَّى حدود القوانين الطبيعية
as well as overstep the limits of natural laws?
يزعم لنفسه وللناس ،
assure himself and other people
أنه يخترق حجب الغيب
that he can penetrate the veil of the unknown
ولم يكن في هذا شيءٌ من الغرابة ولا من العُسْر
There was nothing incongruous in this
فحفظ منه الشيء الكثير
and he had learnt by
heart a considerable amount of it.
ولكنه عُني بشيئيْن عناية خاصة
But he concerned himself with
two things in particular
ويلتهمون ما فيها التهامًا
and devour their contents
greedily
ثم كتبًا في الوعظ والإرشاد
books of sermons and spiritual guidance
مناقب الصالحين
‘The Virtues of the Pious'
فقد كان باعة الكتب يتنقَّلون في القرى والمدن
book-pedlars used to travel about among the villages and
towns
