وينطلق بسرعة إلى مقر عمله

فيدرك أن عليه التحضير للمقابلة المهمة

يحاول التركيز على هذه المسألة بالذات
He tries to concentrate on this problem

لكن فكره يعود المرة تلو الأخرى إلى الرسالتين
، اللتين وضعهما جانباً،
However, his mind keeps reverting to the letters just put aside,



فيقرر التحول إلى موضوع الرسالتين بدلا من التفكير بالمقابلة المزمعة.
and wants to mull over those problems instead

لكن القرقعة التي تحدثها مفاتيح الآلة تزعجه وتنرفزه
The din of his secretary's typewriter annoys him

فيصيح بالسكرتيرة كي تتوقف عن الطباعة.

He shouts at her to stop



بعد لحظة يدرك أنها كانت تطبع رسالة مستعجلة وهامة
A moment later, he realizes that she's typing on a rush assignment


طلب منها طباعتها، فيصيح بها كي تواصل الطباعة.
he gave her, so he shouts at her to go on again



وبما أن خـُلقه طالع يحاول تصفية دماغه وترويق باله بتدخين سيكار كوبي
To calm himself, he begins smoking his after-breakfast cigar



يشعل السيكار فتبزغ مشكلة أخرى في عقله
This brings to mind another problem:

إذ كان قد صمم على الإقلاع عن التدخين

he tells himself that he should be firm in his determination to quit smoking

فيعنف نفسه ويؤكد لذاته بأنه يجب أن يكون حازماً في مقرراته
فيدفع السيكار في المنفضة دفعاً ويطفئه غير آسف.
Ragged nerves tug at the sleeve of his conscience,

and finally he dashes the cigar into an ashtray




في تلك اللحظة غير المواتية
At this inopportune moment

تـُحضر له سكرتيرته كومة من الرسائل التي ينبغي توقيعها.

فيستلقي على الكنبة بتقزز واشمئزاز

لعجزه عن التوصل إلى حل صحيح.

تلك كانت اللحظة الأكثر راحة بالنسبة له،

بعد قليل تعود سكرتيرته لتعيده من دنيا الأحلام والآمال إلى عالم المال والأعمال،

فيعطي انطباعاً بأنه مخادع غشاش يتلاعب بالألفاظ

ذات مرة كان ضفدع كبير مترهل وضفدع صغير مليء بالنشاط والحيوية يسعيان في مناكبها

Once a big fat frog and a lively little frog were hopping along together

عندما قادهما حظهما العاثر للسقوط – بنطة غير موفقة –

when they had the misfortune to jump straight

في سطل من الحليب الطازج.

into a pail of fresh milk


سبحا لساعات طويلة في ذلك السائل الأبيض
They swam for hours and hours,

على أمل الخلاص من تلك المحنة القاسية،

hoping to get out somehow;

but the sides of the pail were steep and slippery,

وقد تراءى لهما شبح الموت فانتابتهما مشاعر الرهبة وواصلا السباحة.


and death seemed certain


وما أن شعر الضفدع الكبير بالإنهاك حتى فقد شجاعته وخارت عزيمته.
When the big frog was exhausted he lost courage


ولم يبدُ له من بارقة أمل في النجاة.
There seemed no hope of rescue


فقال لصديقه الصغير:


"لماذا نحاول معاكسة القدر وبذل المجهود دون طائل؟
"Why keep struggling against the inevitable?9




لا يمكنني يا صاحبي مواصلة السباحة."
I can't swim any longer," he moaned.


"تابع المجهود وإياك أن توقف المحاولة
"Keep on! Keep on!"8



لكن الضفدع الصغير الذي كان يسبح بهمة مستميتة وسط الحليب
urged the little frog, who was still circling the pail


واصلا السباحة لبعض

80 they went on for awhile


لكن الضفدع الكبير قرر أخيراً أن لا فائدة ترجى من كل تلك الجهود
But the big frog decided it was no use.




فقال بشهقة أخيرة:

" he gasped,


"يا أخي الصغير،
"Little brother,


فلنستسلم لقدرنا
we may as well give up,


وها أنا قد قررت بالفعل التوقف عن السباحة، فالوداع."
"I'm going to quit struggling." _7

وما أن كف عن المحاولة
Now only the little frog was left


حتى غاص إلى أرض السطل وتلك كانت النهاية بالنسبة له.


بقي الضفدع الصغير يصارع الحليب والقدر الرهيب بمفرده. وفكر بينه وبين نفسه:
"إن التوقف عن بذل المجهود يعني الموت، ولذلك سأواصل السباحة حتى ييسر لي الله مخرجاً."



مرت ساعتان وكاد الإعياء المضني يشل ساقيّ صديقنا الصغير وبدا له أنه قد فقد القدرة على الحركة ولو لدقيقة أخرى.
Two more hours passed and the tiny legs of the determined little frog were almost paralyzed with exhaustion





ولكن عندما فكر بصديقه قال لنفسه:
He thought to himself,


"الكف عن المحاولة يعني أن أكون وجبة طعام على مائدة أحدهم، وهذا ما لا أرضاه لنفسي.
"Well, to give up is to be dead,


ولذلك سأواصل الخوض في هذا السائل اللبني
so I will keep on swimming." ç



لكنني لن أوقف المحاولة إطلاقاً
but I will not cease trying





كان منتشياً بالتصميم القاطع
Intoxicated with determination,


فواصل السباحة بعزم لا يعرف الخذلان،
the little frog kept on, around and t around and around the pail,


وراح يجوب السطل المرة تلو الأخرى ضارباً الحليب بأطرافه النحيلة ومكوّنا منه أمواجاً تعلوها رغوة شديدة البياض.

بعد فترة شعر بأن جسمه قد تخدّر تماماً
After a while, just as he felt completely numb

وأنه على وشك الغرق.
and thought he was about to drown,


لكن في تلك اللحظة بالذات شعر بشيء صلب تحته.

ولفرط دهشته وجد نفسه يقف على كتلة من الزبدة
To his astonishment, he saw that he was resting on a lump of butter

خضّها ومخضها بفعل حركته الدائبة ومجهوده المتواصل!

وبقفزة واحدة تمكن الضفدع المثابر ذو الهمة الوثابة من الخروج من سطل الحليب إلى الفضاء الرحيب.
And so the successful little frog leaped out of the milk pail to freedom

There was once a certain boy who lived in a little village with his rich and overindulgent grandmother


كان والداه قد توفيا وهو ما زال طفلا صغيراً
His parents had both died when he was very young,

فاحتضنته وتولت رعايته جدته الثرية
leaving him wholly dependent on the grandmother's care


التي أحبته حباً عظيماً
She was so greatly attached to him


ولذلك كانت متساهلة معه إلى أقصى الحدود.

that she tried to fulfill his every desire


لكن للأسف حبها لحفيدها جعلها تتغاضى عن تصرفاته غير السليمة.
Being so blinded by her love for the grandson,

لأنها كانت تنظر إليه على أنه ملاك منزّه عن الأخطاء.

she thought he was perfect and could do no wrong,


كان بلا أدب وتصرفه سيئاً للغاية
He was so mischievous

بحيث أن المدرسة بكاملها ضجت

that in a short time the whole school was astir


بشيطنات هذا الدلـّوع الصغير الشقي.

عندما بلغ الصبي سن السادسة أرسلته جدته إلى مدرسة القرية.



وقد أرسل المدرّسون عدة رسائل إلى جدته وأعربوا لها عن قلقهم من السلوك غير المقبول لحفيدها

The teachers wrote to the grandmother in regard to her grandson's demoralizing conduct


لكن الجدة الحنونة لم تلق بالاً ولم تعر انتباهاً لتلك الشكاوى
, but she turned a deaf ear to the complaints of the teachers

وعنفت المدرسين لاختلاقهم الذنوب وإلصاقهم العيوب بحفيدها "المعصوم".

and scolded them for finding fault with her boy
--so pure in her estimation!ç


وهكذا حظي المحروس بحماية جدته ورضاها عن كل شيء كان يفعله
Under the protection of the grandmother's approval of everything he did,


فازداد سوءاً
the boy grew worse and worse

إلى أن تحول أخيراً من لعب المقالب
and finally turned from playing pranks and performing other trivial misdemeanors,


إلى عمل أشياء أكثر خطورة.
into perpetrating offenses of deeper gravity





غني عن القول أنه تعلم السب و(التشقيع) والكلام البذيء بكل صنوفه واشتقاقاته
After imitating other boys in the use of profane language,


وراح أيضاً يمد يده إلى أغراض زملائه فيأخذ ما يحلو له منها.

and so forth, the boy started stealing different articles from his school mates

وذات يوم سرق قلم حبر ثميناً من أحد زملائه

One day he stole a costly fountain pen from a classmate


وغادر المدرسة على الفور قاصداً ذراعي جدته المُحبة التي كانت ملاذه الوحيد من كل هموم الدنيا.

He hurriedly got away from the school and raced for the welcoming arms of his grandmother




وما أن وصل البيت حتى تلقفته وتلقته الجدة بالأحضان وراحت تغدق عليه الضمات والقبلات بلا حساب.
She began to shower him with kisses and embraces;


وقد وجد الولد صعوبة في استرعاء انتباه جدته
he could scarcely get her attention,


لأن حنانها كان بالفعل بلا حدود.

so great was the impetuosity of her affection




أخيراً وعندما صحَت الجدة من سكرة العطف والحنان قال لها حفيدها: "

At last, when grandmother's effusion of affectionate words ceased, the boy said:ç

"يا ستي، لقد حاولت أن أخبرك ولكنك لم تسمحي لي.
"Grandmother, I tried to tell you, but you would not let me,


فغافلته وبخفة ومهارة (لطشت) القلم منه.
cleverly and unnoticed
I picked one from my classmate's pocket. "ç



وكالعادة ضمت الجدة المُحِبة حفيدها إلى صدرها الدافئ وقالت له:
The grandmother just gave the remorseful grandson a great big hug and said:ç


"يا روح ستك! بسيطة، ولا يهمك. فأنت تبقى قرة عيني وحبيب قلبي مهما فعلت."
"You must have wanted it very much, and so I cannot scold you for taking it. "ç


دُهش الولد لحصوله من جدته على التطمين والكلام اللطيف
The grandson was extremely astonished that he received caresses

بدل التأديب والتعنيف.


instead of the expected and well-deserved scolding


وإذ تشجع بموقفها تجاهه راح يسرق كتباً وأقلاماً وأشياء أخرى ثمينة من زملائه.
Encouraged, the boy started stealing books, pens, and other valuables from his classmates




أخيراً طفح الكيل ولم يعد تصرفه محمولاً
Matters grew so bad


فعقد المدرسون جلسة خاصة بسلوك الولد.
that the village teachers called a special meeting of
all instructors,

وبعد مداولات مطولة ومناقشات حادة

and after a heated discussion,


قرر حتى أكثر المدرسين تساهلا التخلص من الولد المدلل الفاسد، فتم طرده من المدرسة.
even the most unscrupulous teachers voted to get rid of the spoiled child




نوايا الجدة ربما كانت سليمة
The grandmother's intentions were all right,



لكن أسلوبها كان مغلوطاً من الأساس.
but due to her erroneous methods,


ومع توالي السنين أصبح حفيدها لصاً محترفاً.
the boy, as he grew older, developed into a professional thief


وما أن بلغ طور الشباب حتى انتسب إلى عصابة لصوص

When he grew to manhood, he became a full-fledged criminal and joined a crime syndicate,


وصار (أزعر نمرة واحد)، يخطط وينفذ العديد من الجرائم مع رفاقه الحرامية.

scientifically planning and working out many crimes




وبين يوم وآخر كان أحد سكان القرية يعلن عن فقدانه لعنزته أو بقرته أو نعجته.
The neighbors began to find their cattle and chickens missing,


آخرون لاحظوا أيضاً أنهم يفقدون ممتلكات ثمينة من بيوتهم.
and other neighboring villagers began to lose their silverware and other valuable articles from their homes


فحصل هرج ومرج
There was a great commotion,

وتطوع العديد من القرويين لإلقاء القبض على السارق المارق.

and vigilantes were appointed to apprehend the thief


أما الحفيد الذي تمرّس في السرقة وأعمال الشر فقد ازداد جرأة
The grandson, now an expert thief, became bolder and bolder


واكتسب درجة عالية من الدهاء والذكاء بحيث كان لا يترك أثراً يشي به وبأعماله الإجرامية.
because he was able to elude detection


ولكن بما أنه من المستحيل على أي شخص أن يخفي جرائمه إلى ما لا انتهاء،
As no one can forever hide his wrongdoing,


ومن المستحيل أيضاً أن يتمكن دوماً من تضليل كل الناس والضحك على ذقونهم،

and no one can fool all the people all the time,


فقد وقع المجرم في مصيدة نصبها له القرويون وانتهى به المطاف إلى ساحة القضاء.

Her wicked grandson was sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment


بعد أن اعترف بضلوعه في أكثر من أربعين سرقة.
for his confessed crimes of about forty thefts


وعندما قيدت يداه واقتيد إلى السجن
But as the grandson was being led to jail,


التمس طلباً أخيرا


he made a last request

وكان عبارة عن رغبته في أن يهمس بعض كلمات في أذن جدته.

تم استدعاء الجدة على الفور فحضرت بلهفة كبيرة ودموع الحزن تنهمر بغزارة من عينيها،

فانقضّ على أذنها بأسنانه وأمسك بها جيداً وراح ينهشها نهشا والجدة تصرخ وتلعن وتدعي على حفيدها بالويل والثبور وعظائم الأمور.

and held the right ear of his howling grandmother in between his clenched saw-like teeth



وبعد لطمات وركلات قوية من رجال الشرطة

After many punches and kicks from the policemen,


تم الفصل بين الحفيد وجدته فانفصلت أيضاً قطعة لا بأس بها من أذن الجدة.

the grandson at last let go of his grandmother, after biting off a piece of her ear


وبينما كانت سته الحنونة لا تزال تصيح وتشتم


As the grandmother cursed and wailed,


قال لها حفيدها بارتياح ورضى كبيرين:
the grandson triumphantly, with great satisfaction in his eyes, cried out:


"اسمعيني يا ستي! لو أنكِ عنفتني وأدبتني عندما سرقت أول قلم حبر في حياتي
"Remember, if you had scolded me when I stole the first fountain pen,


لما كنت اليوم في طريقي إلى السجن كي أمضي فيه عشر سنوات مع الأعمال الشاقة.
today I would not have to go to jail and serve ten years at hard labor. "ç


وما قمتُ به الآن هو بعض ما تستحقينه على تربيتك الفاسدة لي التي أوصلتني إلى ما أنا عليه اليوم."


المغزى من هذه القصة هو الآتي:

القيام بالأعمال الشريرة لا ينحصر وحسب بمقترف تلك الأعمال،

it is not only bad to personally do evil,


لكن غض الطرف عن التصرفات الشريرة لأعزاء الشخص والقبول الضمني بتلك التصرفات هو أمر خطير للغاية.
but it is extremely pernicious to tolerate evil in one’s dear ones by sanctioning their evil deeds

And the color of mother Africa envelops me


أنا صلاةٌ بقلب الأمهاتِ..
I am a prayer in the hearts of mothers;

أنا دموعُ طفلٍ يداريها فتبكيني
I am
the tears of a child; when he hides them, they cry for me

أنا بلادٌ.. وأوطانٌ.. وقافلةٌ
I am countries… homelands… a caravan


لا اللونُ.. لا العرقُ.. تعنيني..
Blood and ethnicity mean nothing to me


أُهدي المحبة قرباناً لودكمو
I give you my love, an offering for your kindness


والحبُ أنفسُ أنواع القرابينِ..
For love is the most precious offering


من طينةِ الحب قال اللهُ لي كوني
From the clay of love God said ‘BE’,


فجئت أبسمُ بين الكاف والنونِ..

Therefore, I came smiling between the B and E

لأنّي...
لأنّي أشاكس ظنّي...
I say: “As if….!!!” ç
Because…
because I’m wrangling
with my doubts…


وأرجوه يرحل عنك بعيدًا ويرحل عنّي...


begging them to stay away
from you
and away from me,



لأدنوَ منك وتدنوَ مني....
that I may come closer to you
and you to me


فهل ذاك وهم السراب ومحض التمنى...؟
Is that the illusion of mirage,
a mere wish? ç


بربك ماذا جنيتُ لكي تتجنّى عليّ رفيقَ الصبا كل هذا التجنّي؟
By Lord,
– my boyhood companion –
what felony did I commit
that you impeach me thus?ç


أكنتُ تئن وكنت أغني؟
Were you moaning
and I was singing? ç



أكنتَ على الجوع تطوي وأملأ بطني؟
Were you famished
as I filled my tummy? ç



أكنت تبيت على ظمأٍ وأنا يملأُ الراحُ دنّي؟

Were you thirsty
while my cask brimmed
with liquor?ç


أما كان شأنك شأني؟
Weren’t your concerns mine? ç


أما كان سعدك سعدي وحزنك وحزني؟

Wasn’t your joy my joy
and your misery mine too?ç


فما بال قلبك يا صاحبي لِيَ يقلب ظهر المِجنّ؟
Why then has your heart changed,
becoming hostile to me


وأين هو العهد – عهد الوداد الذي دام بينك دهراً وبيني؟
Where is that pledge –
the pledge of friendship –
that lasted between us
for eons? ç


فهبني بحقك أذنبت هبني!
And let’s assume that
I wronged you
– just let’s assume! ç


ألا يشفع الود عندك لي أيها المتجني؟

Cannot our bond intercede for me,
O my accuser?ç

وما لاقت من نجاح وابتهاج
and the success and delight they occasioned,
جعلاه الحبيب الأول لكل نفس
making him everyone's best friend.
، ولا عجب ،
It was hardly surprising.
فإنه كثيرا ما يشعر بأن الدور الذى يلعبه فى سهرته من الخطورة
He often felt the role he played at these parties was
so significant
كأنه أمل الحياة المنشودة،
that it was practically the ultimate anyone could hope for in life.
وكأن حياته العملية بجملتها ضرورة يؤديها
His career as a whole was a necessary task he performed
فى سبيل الفوز بساعات مترعة بالشراب والضحك والغناء والعشق
in order to gain some
hours filled with drink, laughter, song, and flirtation
يقضيها بين صحبه وخلصائه
to be spent in the chummy
company of his pals.
وبين هذا وذاك تسجع فى باطنه أنغام حلوة لطيفة
Now and then some of the sweet, catchy tunes that were
sung
يكون ألطف منه فى جميع الأوقات، .
he was more gentle than on any other occasion
فيخفف من صرامته،
and
not so stern.
وترق ملاحظته، ويسترسل فى الحديث،
His look was more tender and he was much more talkative.
فاستأنست إليه واطمأنت
She
grew to enjoy his company and stopped worrying,
وإن لم تنس أن تضرع إلى الله أن يغفر له معصيته ويتوب عليه
although she never forgot to
implore God to pardon his sin and forgive him.
وإنها لتذكر كم ارتعبت .
She well remembered how distressed she had been
يوم أدركت أنه يعود من سهرته ثملاً،
when she first noticed
he was coming home drunk from his evening escapades
واستدعت الخمر إلى ذهنها ما يقترن بها من وحشية وجنون ومخالفة الدين وهى الأفظع،
To her mind, wine had
always suggested brutality and craziness
and, most shocking of all, an offense
against religion
فتقززت نفسها وركبها الذعر
She had been disgusted and scared.
وعانت لدى عودته كلما عاد آلاما لا قبل لها بها
Whenever he came home,
she had suffered unbearable torments.
وعلى العكس من المنتظر
Paradoxically,
جنت من مصاحبتها له فى هذه الساعة إقبالا منه فى الحديث
by keeping him company at this hour, she reaped a chattiness
وتبسطًا فى فنونه.
and
expansiveness in his conversation
قل أن تظفر بمثله فى أوقات إفاقته الكاملة
she could rarely gain when he was completely
sober
إلا ما كان يبدو منه أول عهده بزواجها
except when they were first married,
وقد تناسته
and she had chosen to overlook that
ولم تلاحظ على سلوكه شذوذًا مريبًا
She had never encountered any alarming or perverse conduct from him
حتى تزايله سورة الخمر
until the effects of the wine had worn off
ويستعيد سيطرته على نفسه .
and he had regained
control of himself.
حرصا منه على وقاره والمظهر الذى يحب أن يبدو به فى بيته
He wished to protect his dignity and image at home.
ومع أنه كان يعاقر الخمر كل ليلة،
، إلى إفراط فى الشرب حتى السكر،
Although he was in
the habit of drinking to the point of intoxication every night
وجعل يزفر أنفاسًا ثقيلة مخمورة.
He was breathing heavily as if inebriated.
وتراخى ظهر السيد إلى مسند الكنبة،
Her husband slumped back against the sofa cushion.
إذ لم تكن ترى لنفسها الحق فى أن تجلس إلى جانبه تأدبا.
In good
conscience she did not think she had any right to sit beside him.
قد أثقل النعاس أجفانهم
, and most of them had sleepy eyes
وكان الجميع مكدودين متعبين مرهقين طبعًا
All of them seemed weary,
رسالةً مهتاجة وسرّية
a very angry and confidential note
وأثار ذلك بورجوازي البلدة إثارة بالغة
This provoked a great outcry among the local burgesses
ومع هذا كله أجدني في ضائقة مالية شديدة
And still I am quite cramped with it all!
فكانت تتذمر بعض الشيء
She grumbled a little.
وإذا ما عمل منحتْهُ تعاونها.
when he acted, she yielded her adherence.
کانت تحبه وتحترمه في غير تكلّف
She simply loved and venerated him.
وتقبّلت الآنسة بابتیستین هذا التدبير في إذعان مطلق
This arrangement was accepted with absolute submission by Mademoiselle Baptistine.
وها نحن أولاء ننقل ههنا هذا الثبت الذي كتبه هو بخط يده
We transcribe here a note made by his own hand
فليس من غير المفيد –
it will not be superfluous,
ولو من أجل الدقة في الأشياء جميعاً على الأقل –
if merely for the sake of exactness in all points,

وسواء أكان ما يُقال عن الرجال صدقاً أم كذباً
True or false, that which is said of men

فإنه كثيراً ما يترك في حَيواتهم،

often occupies as important a place in their lives,
وفي مصائرهم بخاصة،
and above all in their destinies,
فهو یتمتع بشرف النبالة الذي كان يُخلع على رجال القانون.

ولقد قیل إنَّ شارل میرییل کان، برغم زواجه، موضوع اهتمام القوم وأحاديثهم.
In spite of this marriage, however, it was said that Charles Myriel created a great deal of talk
كان شخصه مُفرغاً في قالب رائع.
He was well formed,
وكان على الرغم من قِصَر قامته أنيقاً، كيّساً، ظريفاً
though rather short in stature, elegant, graceful, intelligent;
لقد وقف الشطر الأوّل من حياته، كلَّهُ، على الحياة الاجتماعية وملذاتها.
the whole of the first portion of his life had been devoted to the world and to gallantry.
ثم جاءت الثورة، وتعاقبت الأحداث سراعاً؛
The Revolution came; events succeeded each other with precipitation;

وتشتّتت الأسر البرلمانية، بعد أن قُتل منها خلقٌ كثيرٌ، وبعد أن طوردت ولوحقت.
the parliamentary families, decimated, pursued, hunted down, were dispersed.

وهناك، توفيت زوجته من علة في الرئتين

There his wife died of a malady of the chest,

طالما تهددت حياتها بالخطر.

from which she had long suffered

ولم تخلّف أيما ولد.
He had no children.

ولكنْ أيّ جديد طرأ على مصائر مسیو میرییل بعد ذلك؟
What took place next in the fate of M. Myriel?

تفسّخُ المجتمع الفرنسي القديم،
The ruin of the French society of the olden days,


التي كانت أشد فظاعة في أعين المهاجرين
which were, perhaps, even more alarming to the emigrants

الذين رأوها من بعيد وقد ضخّمها الذعر –
who viewed them from a distance,
with the magnifying powers of terror,

هل أثار ذلك كله أفكاراً تدعو إلى الاعتزال وقهر الذات؟

—did these cause the ideas of renunciation and solitude to germinate in him?


التي استغرقت حياته آنذاك،
which absorbed his life,

واحدة من تلك الضربات الرهيبة الغامضة .
one of those mysterious and terrible blows

التي تصرع أحياناً – بطعنة في القلب –
which sometimes overwhelm,
by striking to his heart,

الرجلَ الذي عجزت الكوارث العمومية عن زعزعته،
a man whom public catastrophes would not shake,

بأن تسدّد جُمع كفها إلى حياته أو قَدَرِهِ

ولم يبقَ في الإمكان معرفة تلك المسألة الآن – إلى أن يقصد إلى باريس.

—just what, is not precisely known—took him to Paris.



وإذ لاحظ نابوليون أن الرجل العجوز نظر إليه في شيء من الفضول،

Napoleon, on finding himself observed with a certain curiosity by this old man,

استدار وتساءل في خشونة
turned round and said abruptly


وفي میسور کل منا أن یفید من ذلك
Each of us can profit by it

غمر الدهش مسیو میريیل إذ عرف أنه عُيِّن أسقفاً لمدینة د...
was utterly astonished to learn that he had been appointed Bishop of D——

وتَعيَّن على مسيو ميرييل أن يذعن للقَدَر الذي يُلمّ بكلّ وافد جديد إلى مدينة صغيرة، .
M. Myriel had to undergo the fate of every newcomer in a little town,

حيث توجد ألسنٌ كثيرة تتكلم،
where there are many mouths which talk,

ورؤوس قليلة تفكر

لقد تَعيَّن عليه أن يذعن برغم أنه كان أسقفاً، .

فقد كانت الأقاويل المتصلة باسمه مجرد أقاويل لیس غیر

كما يعبّر أهل الجنوب في لغتهم العنيفة

فبعد تسع سنوات من نهوضه بأعباء الأسقفية وإقامته في

Mademoiselle Baptistine was a long, pale, thin, gentle creature;

كانت تحقيقاً للصورة المثالية التي تعبّر عنها لفظة ((محترمة))؛
she realized the ideal expressed by the word “respectable”;

إذْ يبدو وكأن من الضروري أن تكون المرأة أمّاً لكي تكون جليلة.
for it seems that a woman must needs be a mother in order to be venerable

إنها لم تكن جميلة في يوم من الأيام.
She had never been pretty;



وكانت حياتها كلها، التي لم تكن غير سلسلة موصولة من أعمال التقى،.
her whole life, which had been nothing but a succession of holy deeds,

قد خلعت عليها ضرباً من البياض الشفاف،
had finally conferred upon her a sort of pallor and transparency;

حتى إذا شاخت اكتسبت ما يمكن أن ندعوه جمال الصلاح
and as she advanced in years she had acquired what may be called the beauty of goodness.

إن ما كان في صباها هُزالاً انتهى إلى أن يصبح في كهولتها شفافية؛ .
What had been leanness in her youth
had become transparency in her maturity;

وهذه الأثيرية كانت تمكّن الناظر إليها من أن يرى الملاكَ الذي في ذات نفسها.
and this diaphaneity allowed the angel to be seen.

كانت روحاً أكثر منها عذراء فانية
She was a soul rather than a virgin




كان شخصها أشبه بالطيف،
Her person seemed made of a shadow;

فليس فيها من الجسد ما يكفي لأن يوقع في نفس المرء فكرة الجنس there was hardly sufficient body to provide for
sex;

قليل من المادة ينطوي على شرارة –
a little matter enclosing a light;

عينان واسعتان مطرقتان إلى الأرض أبداً؛
large eyes forever drooping;—

ذريعة تتخذها الروح للبقاء على هذه الأرض
a mere pretext for a soul’s remaining on the earth


بيضاء البشرة، بدينةً، نشيطةً، مشغولةً على نحو مطّرد
white old woman, corpulent and bustling;

كانت دائماً مبهورةً منقطعة النَّفَس،
always out of breath,—in the first place,

بسبب من نشاطها الموصول
because of her activity,

وبسبب من داء الربو الذي تشكو منه ثانياً
and in the next, because of her asthma.



مَحوطاً بآيات الإجلال المنصوص عليها في المراسيم الأمبراطورية with the honors required by the Imperial decrees,

التي تجعل الأسقف في رتبة تلي رتبة قائد الجيش مباشرةً
which class a bishop immediately after a major-general

كان العمدة والرئيس يقومان بزيارته
The mayor and the president paid the first call on him,

كان قصر الأسقف في مدينة د... محاذياً للمستشفى
The episcopal palace of D—— adjoins the hospital.

كان صرحاً رحباً جميلاً، .
The episcopal palace was a huge and beautiful house,

شيّده من الحجارة، في أوائل القرن الماضي
built of stone at the beginning of the last century

کان ذلك القصر، في الحق، نُزُلاً أمیریاً فخماً،
This palace was a genuine seignorial residence

وکانت سیما الأبهة تغلب على کل شيء فیه:
Everything about it had a grand air,

– ((هذا ما يبدو لي)).
So it seems to me

((ذلك ما خطر لي تماماً))

That is the thought which occurred to me


يجب أن نفوّض أمرنا إلى الله
One must resign one’s self

وإنما دارت هذه المحادثة في قاعة الطعام من الدور الأرضيّ.
This conversation took place in the gallery dining-room on the ground floor.

وصمت الأسقف بضع لحظات.
The Bishop remained silent for a moment;

ثم التفت فُجاءةً إلى مدير المستشفى.

then he turned abruptly to the director of the hospital.

((كم سريراً تستطيع هذه القاعة وحدها أن تضم يا سيدي))؟.

how many beds do you think this hall alone would hold?”

فصاح المدير مشدوهاً:

“ exclaimed the stupefied director.


وأجال الأسقف عينيه في القاعة،
The Bishop cast a glance round the apartment,

وبدا وكأنه يقيس طولها وعرضها ويحسب
and seemed to be taking measures and calculations with his eyes


وقال مخاطباً نفسه:
said he, as though speaking to himself


إن ههنا خطأ من غير شك.
There is evidently a mistake here.

أقول لك إنّ هناك خطأ.

There is some mistake, I tell you;

أنتم تحتلون بيتي وأنا أحتل بيتكم.
you have my house, and I have yours.

أعيدوا بيتي إليّ. وانزلوا هنا في هذا المكان،
فهو لكم)).
Give me back my house; you are at home here


تسدّ نفقاتها الشخصية.
which sufficed for her personal wants.

وها نحن أولاء ننقل ههنا هذا الثبت الذي كتبه هو بخط يده
We transcribe here a note made by his own hand


، وقد واظبت عليها ربع قرن من الزمان
For a quarter of a
century she had continued to discharge it

بهمة لا يعتريها الكلال
with an ardor undimmed by ennui
وانتهى الرجل إلى موقفها ،

فراحت تتقدمه رافعة المصباح،

فتبعها وهو يتمتم: ـ

فقالت بصوت خفيض ينم عن الأدب والخضوع: ـ

وفى ثوان احتوتهما الحجرة،
When they reached the bedroom,
فاتجهت أمينة إلى الخوان لتضع المصباح عليه،
Amina went to put the lamp on the table,

فى حين علق السيد عصاه بحافة شباك السرير
while her husband hung his stick on the edge of the bedstead.
وخلع الطربوش
He took off his
fez,
ووضعه على الوسادة التى تتوسط الكنبة
which he placed on the cushion at the center of the sofa,
ثم اقتربت المرأة منه لتنزع عنه ملابسه
and then his wife
approached to help him remove his clothes

، وبدا فى وقفته طويل القامة عريض المنكبين .
He looked tall and broad-shouldered
standing there.
ضخم الجسم ذا كرش كبيرة مكتنزة
He had a massive body with a large, firm belly,
اشتملت عليها جميعًا جبَّة وقفطان فى أناقة وبحبحة
covered smartly
and comfortably by a cloak and a caftan
دلَّتا على رفاهية ذوق وسخاء،
that showed both his good taste and his
wealth.
ولم يكن شعره الأسود المنبسط من مفرقه على صفحتى رأسه فى عناية بالغة، His spread of neatly combed and parted black hair,
إلا لتؤكد رفاهة ذوقه وسخاءه
to emphasize his refinement and
affluence
أما وجهه فمستطيل الهيئة مكتنز الأديم قوى التعبير واضح الملامح،.
His long face was expressive,
with firm skin and clean-cut features.
يدل فى جملته على بروز الشخصية والجمال
Taken as a whole, it revealed his strong personality and good looks.
بعينيه الزرقاوين الواسعتين، وأنفه الكبير الأشم
He had
wide, blue eyes and a large, proud nose which,
المتناسق
على كبره ،
despite its size, was well
proportioned
مع بسطة الوجه
for the expanse of his face.
وفمه الواسع بشفتيه الممتلئتين،
His lips were full
وشاربه الفاحم الغليظ المفتول طرفاه بدقة لا مزيد عليها
and the ends of his
thick, black mustache were twisted with extraordinary care.
ولما تدانت المرأة منه .
When his wife came near him,
بسط ذراعيه
he spread his arms out.
فخلعت الجبَّة عنه وأطبقتها بعناية
She removed his cloak
and folded it carefully

ثم وضعتها على الكنبة،
before placing it on the sofa.
وعادت إليه ففكَّت حزام القفطان
Turning back to him, she
loosened the sash of his caftan,
ونزعته وجعلت تدرجه بالعناية نفسها
removed it, and folded it up with similar care
لتضعه فوق الجبة،
to
lay it on top of the cloak.
ومد ساقيه مسندًا قذاله إلى الحائط
He spread out his legs and leaned his head against the wall.
وانتهت المرأة من ترتيب ملابسه .
After his wife
finished arranging his clothes,
فقعدت عند قدميه الممدودتين
she sat beside his extended feet
وراحت تخلع حذاءه وجوربيه،
and began to
remove his shoes and socks.
ولما كشف قدمه اليمنى
When his right foot was bared,
بدا أول عيب فى هذا الجسم الهائل الجميل
the first defect of
this handsome, powerful body was revealed.
فى خنصره الذى تآكل من توالى الكشط بالموسى
.
His little toe had been eaten away
by successive scrapings of a razor
وتمضمض طويلا
and rinsed
thoroughly
، ثم تناول المنشفة من فوق مسند الكنبة
Then he took the towel from the sofa cushion
ومضى يجفف رأسه ووجهه ويديه and set about drying
his head, face, and hands,
بينما حملت المرأة الطست وذهبت به إلى الحمام
while his wife carried the basin to the bath.

ولو أن حديث أمها لم يُجْد مع حزنها وقت اشتداده.
Although her mother's words did not help much then,
إلا أنها مع الأيام سلَّمت بما فيه من حق ووجاهة،
she eventually accepted
their truth and validity.
فليكن ما قيل لها حقًّا
Even if the rumor was accurate,
فلعله من صفات الرجولة
perhaps that was another
characteristic of manliness,
كالسهر والاستبداد،
like late nights and tyranny.
وشر على أى حال خير من شرور كثيرة،
At any rate, a single evil
was better than many.
وليس من الهيِّن أن تسمح لوسواس بأن يفسد عليها حياتها الطيبة
It would be a mistake to allow suspicion to wreck her
good life
المليئة بالهناء والرغد،
filled with happiness and comfort.
ثم لعل ما قيل بعد هذا كله أن يكون وهمًا أو كذبًا
Moreover, in spite of everything,
perhaps the rumor was idle speculation or a lie.
ولولا أنها تسمعه كل ليلة فى مثل هذه الساعة لأنكرته،

ووجدت أن موقفها من الغيرة، شأنها حيال المتاعب التى تعترض سبيل حياتها، .
She discovered that jealousy was
no different from the other difficulties troubling her life.
لا يعدو التسليم بها كقضاء نافذ لا تملك حياله شيئًا،
To accept them was an
inevitable and binding decree.
فلم تهتد إلى وسيلة فى مقاومتها إلا أن تنادى الصبر
Her only means of combating them was, she
found, to call on patience
وتستعدى مناعتها الشخصية،
and rely on her inner strength,
ملاذها الأوحد فى مغالبة ما تكره،
the one resource in the
struggle against disagreeable things.
، ولولا أنها تسمعه كل ليلة فى مثل هذه الساعة لأنكرته،
. If she had not heard him every night at about this
hour, she would not have believed it.

My recollection of how TOBACCO ROAD had
its beginning is stark and vivid.
كان ذلك في وقدة الصيف الشاوية في جورجيا،
It was in the heat of midsummer in Georgia,

وكنتُ أتمشّى في طريق مغبرّة،
and I was walking along a dusty road

هنالك كنتُ في مسقط رأسي،

Here I was in my own country


أرض عرفتُها عمري كلَّه

انتزعت مقداراً من الأمل كافياً لحملى على تمني الشفاء والسعي بسبيله.

وكأنما توشك مفاصلها أن تتخلّع.

لكأن ذلك الفرس البالغ القوة ينكر إمكان جذب المركبة حتى قمة الهضبة.
like an unusually emphatic horse, denying that the coach could be got up the hill.
فما إن يسمع المسافُر المصعِّد إلى جانب المركبة جلجلة الفرس وطنينه حتى يجفل،
Whenever the leader made this rattle, the passenger started,
شأن المسافر العصبيّ، ويستبد به الهمّ والقلق.
as a nervous passenger might, and was disturbed in the mind

خصمًا نبيلاً لكنه كان دوما
but he was always a chivalrous opponent
لقد كان يمقت
جنسها وتنعدم ثقته فيه،
He disliked and distrusted the sex
إذا أن لديه أسلوبا مهذبًا

narrow human doctrines

To pluck the mask from the face of the Pharisee,

إنّ هذه الأشياء والأعمال لَعَلَى طرفي نقيض.
These things and deeds are diametrically opposed
إنها لتتمايز تمايز الرذيلة عن الفضيلة
: they are as distinct as is vice from virtue.
والذين تكشف آذانهم في كل احتجاج على التعصّب
whose ears detect in each protest against bigotry
إهانة للورع، الذي هو نائب الله على الأرض.
an insult to piety, that regent of God on earth
إني أحب أن أنبّه أمثال هؤلاء المتشككين إلى بعض الفروق الواضحة
I would suggest to such doubters certain obvious distinctions;
- أحب أن أذكرهم ببعض الحقائق البسيطة .
I would remind them of certain simple truths

They had only played some harmless pranks to tease her
ولكن الحمد كل الحمد لله الذى بكلامه.
Praise God, the merit was all God's.
اطمأن قلبها وبرحمته استقامت حياتها
He calmed her heart and with His mercy brought order to her life
ولكنها لم تكن تعرف الطمأنينة الحقة حتى يعود الغائب،
But her mind was never completely at rest until her
husband returned
أجل كان مجرد وجوده بالبيت ـ صاحيًا أو نائما ـ كفيلاً ببث السلام فى نفسها، Indeed, the mere fact of his presence in the house, whether awake or asleep, was enough to make her feel secure.

وقد خطر لها مرة،

إلا أن يحمِّر لها عين الغضب،

وقد أطاعت، وتفانت فى الطاعة
She yielded so wholeheartedly
حتى كرهت أن تلومه على سهره ولو فى سرَّها،
that she even disliked blaming him privately for his nights out
ووقر فى نفسها أن الرجولة الحقّة والاستبداد والسهر إلى ما بعد منتصف الليل
She became convinced that true manliness, tyranny, and staying out till after midnight
صفات متلازمة لجوهر واحد،
were common characteristics of a single entity

ثم انقلبت مع الأيام تباهى بما يصدر عنه
With the passage of time she grew proud of whatever he meted out,
سواء ما يسرها أو يحزنها

whether it pleased or saddened her
، وظلت على جميع الأحوال الزوجة المحبِّة المطيعة المستسلمة، .
No matter what happened, she remained a loving, obedient, and docile wife.
ولم تأسف يومًا على ما ارتضت لنفسها من السلامة والتسليم،
She had no regrets at all about reconciling herself to a type of security based on surrender
وإنها لتستعيد ذكريات حياتها فى أى وقت تشاء فلا يطالعها إلا الخير والغبطة،
Whenever she thought back over her life, only goodness and happiness came to mind
على حين تلوح لها المخاوف والأحزان كالأشباح الخاوية
Fears and sorrows seemed meaningless ghosts to her,
فلا تستحق إلا ابتسامة رثاء
worth nothing more than a smile of pity
ثم جاء الأبناء تباعا
Then the children arrived, one after the other
ولكنهم كانوا أول عهدهم بالدنيا لحما طريا
In their early days in the world,
though, they were tender sprouts
لا يبدد خوفا ولا يطمئن جانبًا،
unable to dispel her fears or reassure her
وعلى العكس ضاعف من خوفها بما أثار فى نفسها المتهافتة من إشفاق عليهم وجزع أن يمسهم سوء،
On the contrary, her fears were multiplied by her troubled soul's concern for them and her anxiety that they might be harmed.
فكانت تحويهم بذراعيها
She would hold them tight,
وتغمرهم بأنفاس العطف
lavish affection on them
وتحيطهم فى اليقظة والمنام
, and surround them, whether awake or asleep,
أما الطمأنينة الحقة فلم تكن لتذوقها .
True peace of mind she would not achieve
حتى يعود الغائب من سهرته
until her husband returned from his evening's entertainment.

ابعد عنا، ليس هذا مقامك،
Leave us alone. This isn't where you belong.
وعندما طالت بها معاشرة الأرواح بتقدم الزمن
Over the course of time as she gained more experience living with the spirits,
تخففت من مخاوفها كثيرًا
her fears diminished a good deal.
واطمأنت لدرجة إلى دعاباتهم التى لم تجر عليها سوءًا قط
She was calm enough to jest with them without being frightened
فكانت إذا ترامى إليها حس طائف منهم
If she happened to sense one of them prowling about,

قالت فى نبرات لا تخلو من دالة: «
she would say in an almost intimate tone,
ألا تحترم عباد الرحمن!.

"Have you no respect for those who worship God the Merciful?
الله بيننا وبينك فاذهب عنا مكرما

فبدا الطريق إلى يسارها ضيقًا ملتويًا
To her left, the street appeared narrow and

متلفعا بظلمة تكثف فى أعاليه حيث تطل نوافذ البيوت النائمة،
. It was enveloped in a gloom that was thicker overhead

وإلى يمينها التف الطريق بالظلام ،
To her right, the street
was engulfed in darkness.

حيث يخلو من المقاهى
There were no coffeehouses in that direction,
، وحيث توجد المتاجر الكبيرة التى تغلق أبوابها مبكرا
only
large stores, which closed early

فلا يلفت النظر به إلا

There was nothing to attract the eye except the
. منظر ألفتْه منها العينان ربع قرن من الزمان

teeming with spirits and ghosts
، تغفو ساعة وتأرق أخرى
She would doze for an hour and lie awake the

حتى يعود الزوج العتيد من سهرة طويلة
until her redoubtable husband returned from a long night out
ولكى يطمئن قلبها
To set her mind at rest
اعتادت أن تطوف بالحجرات
she had gotten into the habit of going from room to
room,
مصطحبة خادمتها
accompanied by her maid,
دفعًا للشياطين،
in order to ward off demons
وتندس فى الفراش ولسانها لا يمسك عن التلاوة
and get into bed, but her recitations would continue

ولشد ما كانت تخاف الليل فى عهدها الأول بهذا البيت،
She had been terrified of the night when she first lived in this house
هى التى عرفت عن عالم الجن أضعاف ما تعرفه عن عالم الإنس
She knew
far more about the world of the jinn than that of mankind

وأن الشياطين لا يمكن أن تضل طويلا عن هذه الحجرات القديمة الواسعة الخالية،
There were demons who
could not be lured away from these spacious, empty old rooms for long

ولعلها آوت إليها قبل أن تحمل هى إلى البيت،
Perhaps
they had sought refuge there before she herself had been brought to the house,
فكم دبَّ إلى أذنيها همساتهم!

فكان من المعتاد كل عام أن يجرف النهر عددًا كبيرًا من الأشياء المدهشة أو التافهة، العجيبة أو العادية، ويرسِّبها في مكان آخر.
. The river could be counted on every year to sweep off and deposit elsewhere a good number of surprising or cumbersome or bizarre or homely objects.
ومن الأمثلة على ذلك لفائف من الأسلاك، أو سلَّم نقَّال سليم،
Rolls of wire, an intact set of steps,
أو مجرفة منثنية، أو إناءُ صنعِ الفشار.
a bent shovel, a corn kettle.
وقد عثر الصبيان على عظم البقرة معلَّقًا في أحد فروع شجرة سُمَّاق —
The hipbone had been found caught on the branch of a sumac—
الأمر الذي بدا ملائمًا؛
which seemed proper,
لأن كل هذه الأفرع اللينة بدت مشابهة لقرون الأبقار أو الغزلان،
because all those smooth branches were like cow horns or deer antlers,
وكان لبعضها أطراف مخروطية صدئة اللون
some with rusty cone tips.
لم يمر وقت طويل على الفيضان، ما صعَّب اتباع هذه المسارات،.
The flood had been so recent that these paths were not easy to follow.

فكان عليهم شقُّ طريقهم فيها بين الأغصان المقطوعة،
You had to kick your way through beaten-down brush
والقفز بين أكوام الحشائش الملتصقة بفعل الوحل،
and jump from one hummock of mud-plastered grass to another.
وكان أولئك الصبية يقفزون أحيانًا بلا مبالاة،
Sometimes they jumped carelessly
فيهبطون في الوحل أو برك المياه التي خلَّفها الفيضان.
and landed in mud or pools of leftover floodwater,
وعندما كانت أرجلهم تبتل،
and once their feet were wet
كانوا لا يبالون بعد ذلك بموطئها.
they gave up caring where they landed.
أخذوا يخوضون في الوحل،
They squelched through the mud
وينثرون المياه بإنزال أرجلهم في البرك، .
and splashed in the pools
ما جعل المياه تصل إلى أعلى أحذيتهم الطويلة الرقبة المصنوعة من المطاط
so that the water came in over the tops of their rubber boots.
؛ فمزقت السحب مكونة أشكالًا تشبه خيوط الصوف القديم،
it was pulling the clouds apart into threads of old wool,
وكانت طيور النورس والغربان تتشاجر وينقضُّ بعضها على بعض فوق النهر.
and the gulls and crows were quarrelling and diving over the river.
حامت الصقور الجارحة أيضًا فوقهم مراقِبةً إياهم من أعلى؛
Buzzards were circling over them, on the high lookout;
وطيور أبو الحناء أيضًا عادت لتوها،
the robins had just returned,
وطيور الشحرور ذات الأجنحة الحمراء انطلقت في أزواج،
and the red-winged blackbirds were darting in pairs,
عاكسةً ألوانًا براقة كأنها غُمِست في طلاء ما
striking bright on your eyes as if they had been dipped in paint
لقد كانوا أكبر من أن يرفعوا العصي الخشبية ويقلدوا صوت إطلاق الرصاص؛.
They were too old to raise sticks and make shooting noises.
فكانوا يتحدثون بنبرة آسفة اعتيادية،
They spoke with casual regret,
كما لو كانت هذه الأسلحة متوفرة لديهم بالفعل
as if guns were readily available to them.
يجب أن نلتمس العون من تلك القوة المباركة بثقة لا متناهية، .
Only appeal to
that Force with infinite confidennce,
طاردين من أفكارنا كل
الشكوك،
casting out all doubt
وإلا سينحرف سهم الذهن عن مساره ويخطئ هدفه
and the spirit of looking for the
desired result.
أطلقت السيارات نفيرها — تحذيرًا أو توبيخًا للصبية الثلاثة
Cars honked at them—a warning or a reproof—
لكنهم لم يلقوا لها بالًا
but they paid
no attention.
عزم الصبية على القفز في الماء .
So they would jump into the water
واستشعار الصقيع كطعنات خناجر ثلجية
and feel the cold hit them like ice daggers.
ويدفعون أطرافهم الخدرة في الملابس
they would push their numb limbs into their clothes
فيشعرون بألم عودة الدماء تجري في أجسادهم
and feel the painful recapture of their bodies by their startled blood
ومن ثم الارتياح لتحقيق ما سيتباهون به
and the relief of making their brag true.
وحاول ضبط عواطفه ،
and refrained himself as long as he could,
كي لا تشعر زوجته
وأولاده بقلقه
that his wife and children should not perceive his distress
لكنه لم يتمكن من المحافظة على هدوئه
but he could not be silent long
فصاح
قائلا
he brake out with a lamentable cry
هنا دُهش أفراد أسرته لكلامه،
At this his relations were sore amazed;
وقال لهم أن حمله الثقيل قد هدّ
حيله وأوهن عزيمته
am in myself undone by reason of a burden that lieth hard upon me





إن الذي تتركانه لا يقارن بالذي أطلبه.
ALL which you shall forsake is not worthy to be compared with a little of that which I am seeking to enjoy
فهيا معي وستتأكدان من صدق ما أقوله.
Come away, and prove my words.
أطلب إرثاً لا يزول ولا يتطرق له الفناء.
I seek an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away
وهذا الإرث موجود في السماء ومحفوظ لكل من يطلبه بصدق وهمة.
and it is laid up in heaven, and safe there
وسيعطى لطالبيه عندما يبذلون المجهود اللازم في سبيله
to be bestowed, at the time appointed, on them that diligently seek it..

دعك من الكتاب ومن طول الحديث،
away with your book;
فقط اخبرنا إن كنت ستعود معنا أم لا.
؟ will you go back with us or no
يا أخي لا تتحامل عليه
Don't revile

وبصراحة أنا أحبذ رفقته.
my heart inclines to go with my neighbour.
يا سبحان الله! يبدو أن عدد الحمقى آخذ في الازدياد
. What! more fools still!
ضع عقلك في رأسك يا رجل ودعنا نعود .
Be ruled by me, and go back;
لأنك لا تدري إلى أين سيأخذك هذا المعتوه
who knows whither such a brain-sick fellow will lead you?
.هل تعرف يا صاحبي الطريق المفضي إلى ذلك المكان السعيد؟
do you know the way to this desired place?
لما قصف راجعاً ولما سفـّه رأيي واستخف بنا كما فعل.
he would not thus lightly have given us the back.
إن تصوري لها في ذهني أسهل عليّ من شرحها لك بلساني.
I can better conceive of them with my mind, than speak of them with my tongue.
ولكن بما أنك مهتم في التعرف عليها
but yet, since you are desirous to know,


وهل تعتقد أن مواصفات كتابك دقيقة ومطابقة للحقيقة؟
do you think that the words of your book are certainly true?
نعم. فمصدرها موثوق لا ترقى إليه الشكوك ولا يتطرق إليه الباطل.
Yes, verily; for it was made by Him that cannot lie.
عظيم! ولكن ما هي بالضبط تلك الكنوز؟
Well said; what things are they?

: مملكة من النعيم لا انتهاء لها
There is an endless kingdom to be inhabited,
وحياة خالدة للتمتع بتلك المملكة إلى أبد الآبدين!
and everlasting life to be given us, that we may inhabit that kingdom for ever.


أمجاد عتيدة وأنوار ربانية.
There are crowns and glory to be given us, and garments
أشد سطوعاً من نور الشمس في عز الظهيرة
that will make us shine like the sun in the firmament of heaven

شيء رائع يا أخي، وماذا غير ذلك؟
This is very pleasant; and what else?
الذين تبهر رؤيتهم الأنظار.
that will dazzle your eyes to look on them.

يا له من كلام يبهج الخاطر ويحرك أعماق المشاعر.
The hearing of this is enough to ravish one's heart.
فهل فعلاً بالإمكان الحظوة بذلك النعيم وما هو السبيل إليه؟
But are these things to be enjoyed? How shall we get to be sharers thereof?
والله يا أخي يكاد قلبي يخرج من صدري من شدة الفرح بهذه الوعود.
Well, my good companion, glad am I to hear of these things:
فهيا بنا نسرع نحو مقصدنا المبارك.
come on, let us mend our pace.
ما أن انتهيا من الحديث حتى اقتربا من نقعة موحلة
as they had ended this talk they drew near to a very miry slough,
فسقطا فيها وراحا يجاهدان للتخلص منها وقد تمرغا بالوحل.
and they, being heedless, did both fall suddenly into the bog
: أهذا هو النعيم الذي لم تتوقف عن الحديث عنه ووصف روائعه؟
Is this the happiness you have told me all this while of?

فإن كانت هذه البداية فكيف ستكون النهاية؟
If we have such ill speed at our first setting out, what may we expect betwixt this and our journey's end?

إن قـُدر لي أن أخرج حياً من هذا المستنقع فسأسامحك بكل تلك الكنوز وسأعود من حيث أتيت غير نادم.
May I get out again with my life, you shall possess the brave country
alone for me.
فيمم وجهه شطر بيته وهو يلعن الساعة التي قبل بها برفقة الموحد الذي لم يره بعدها أبداً.
: so away he went, and Christian saw him no more
يجب أن يتحاشى المرء التلفظ بالكلام
الجارح حتى ولو كان صحيحاً.
Avoid speaking unpleasant words, even though
they are true.

الكلمات المشبعة بالإخلاص
Words that are saturated with sincerity
تعالَ إلى بساتيني = تماهى في شراييني
فان الحب أرقني = ونار الوجد تكويني
Come into the headings of my life,
Be infused into my veins and arteries.
Love has kept me wide-awake,
While the fire of longing scorched me.
تعال وناغني عشقا = فبعض العشق يُحييني
كندف الماء في عجل = فذي القطرات تكويني
Come and sing your love to me,
For love revives my spirit.
It refreshes me like a gentle spray
From a water wheel.
Those drops will slake my thirst.
فلي روح تعاتبني = أذا ما غبت تُضنيني
تسائلني تؤنبني = وتشقيني وتعييني
My soul chides me,
Complaining of your absence:
Pestering me when you are away.
It questions and rebukes me,
It tortures and exhausts me.
فقد أصبحت منزلها = فتأويها وتأويني
أكونك لهفة صعدت = وفرّت من أحاييني
You have become its dwelling place,
Enfolding us both.
Be not a vanishing wisp,
Fleeing beyond my reach.
فرفقا لا تكن صعبا = أقل الصعب يدميني
كما قارورة روحي = إذا كُسرت ستؤذيني
Be gentle with me, don’t be hard;
The slightest harshness wounds my feelings.
My soul is like a fragile bottle,
Once shattered, causes me pain.
ولا تحفل إذا كانت = سني العمر تدنيني
إلى فصل به تذوي = غصون الورد والتين
Mind not if my years bring me closer
To a season where the blossoms of youth
Wilt and fold.
تعال بدفقة حرى = فذاك العشق يغريني
على كفيك أمنيتي = سَقَت عطشى بساتيني
Come in full eagerness,
Such romance lures me.
The fulfillment of my hopes is in your hands,
My thirsty gardens await your gentle showers
الشوق يقتلني والوجد يُضنيني
والحبُّ في مهجتي يغزو شراييني
Intense longing consumes my being and all
And love surges in my veins, through and through
طال الغياب ُوإني في محبتكم
أرجو اللقاءٓ وصبري ليس يكفيني
Your absence has lasted long, beloved of my soul
And my patience is wearing thin, awaiting you
ملامحي تغيرت
ودفء وجنتيك لم يزل على
أصابعي
My features have changed
And the warmth of your cheeks
Still lingers on my fingers.
وأحرفي جميعها تلونت
ولونك الوردي يا حبيبتي
مازال في ودائعي
All the letters of my words have taken on various hues
While your rosy color, beloved
I treasure as a sacred trust.
قاموس حبك القديم قد ظننته انطوى
وأنني ركنته في عتمة المراجع
I fancied the dictionary of your old love folded
And stored by me in a dark niche
Where reference books are kept.
وحينما لامسته
كالمارد الجبار من أغلالها
قد زمجرت زوابعي
Yet as soon as I touched it,
Like a mighty giant
My strong outbursts
Broke their restricting shackles
And furiously roared.
ظننتها صارت رمادا ذكريات
الحب تلك بيننا
The memories of our love
I thought had been reduced to ashes
لكن جمر العشق منقوش
على مدامعي
كأننا بالأمس يا حبيبتي
قد افترقنا
Yet, the coals of deep, ineffable feelings of affection
Permanently rest on my eyelids.
It seems, beloved, that our separation
Took place only yesterday.
لم تزل ساخنة دموعنا
عاشقة أكفنا
رغم صقيع الليل في الصوامع
Our tears are still warm
Our hands still ardently in love
In spite of the frigid night frost of reclusive retreats


رَقَّ النَّسِيمُ، فَمَاسَتِ الأَشجَارُ
تِيهًا، وَعَانَقَ مَيْسَهَا آذَارُ
Gently the trees swayed as the breeze turned soft and tender
The Month of Bloom embraced the sway
أَلقَى تَحِيَّتَهُ على أغصَانِهَا
فَتَمَايَلَتْ، لَكَأَنَّهَا أَوْتَارُ
It whispered its greeting to the branches
Back and forth they swung, as if chords finely tuned
أَزجَتْ إِلَى الأَطيارِ لَحنًا رائِقًا
فَتَسَاجَلَتْ بِفَضَائِهِ الأَطيارُ
They offered a sweet melody to the birds
Prompting them to fill the air with tuneful songs
وَتَرَاقَصَتْ نَشْوَى، وفي أَرياشِها
حَطَّ الرَّبِيعُ، وسَافَرَ النُّوَّارُ
They ecstatically danced as Spring nestled in their feathers
And colorful blossoms journeyed vast therein
وَعَلَى سِياجٍ غارِقٍ في صَمْتِهِ
نَشَرَ الهَدِيلَ بِفِتْنَةٍ مِنْقَارُ
A dove, perching on a silence-shrouded fence
Enchantingly cooed her refrains
وَرْقَاءُ أَرَّقَهَا النَّوَى، وَأَذَابَهَا
حُزْنًا يَزِنُّ بِحَزِّهِ تَذْكَارُ
Consumed by longing, melting in sorrow
Her plaintive passions, by poignant memories, intensified
وَأَنَا أَصِيخُ لِسَجْعَةٍ سِحرِيَّةٍ
فِيهَا قُلُوبُ العَاشِقِينَ تَحَارُ
Raptly I listen to a magical monotone
Amazingly bewitching lovers' hearts
والعابِراتُ يَضُوعُ مِنْهُنَّ الشَّذَى
فَيَكَادُ يَسْكَرُ بالعَبِيرِ نَهَارُ
A pleasing scent subtly wafts from maidens passing by
Intoxicatingly saturating the day with fragrance sweet
والأُفْقُ زَنَّرَهُ حَنَانُ سَحَابَةٍ
بَيْضَاءَ أَهداهَا لَهُ أَيَّارُ
A May-white cloud fondly enwrapped the horizon
with an embrace, affectionately warm
عُرسٌ، وكانَ الحُبُّ يَبْذُرُ بَوْحَهُ
بَينَ القُلُوبِ، فَتَنْبُتُ الأَسرارُ
A festivity of rejoicing; love scattering its romantic soft words
Among the hearts, sprouting therein into guarded secrets
قالَ: الْهَوَى فِسْقٌ، وَغِيٌّ سافِرٌ
والحُبُّ رِجْسٌ أَهلُهُ كُفَّارُ!
Someone once said: Passionate love is sinful, flagrantly iniquitous
It is moral depravity; lovers are apostates
قُلتُ: انْتَظِرْ، وانْظُرْ إلى هذا المَدَى
تَغْفُو على لَوْحَاتِهِ الأَبصارُ
Hold it! I said, and look closely at this wide and open extent
Its spectacular and captivating panorama
Renders one blissfully drowsy
تَتَهامَسُ الْبَسَمَاتُ في أحضانِهِ
فَتَكادُ تَنهَضُ في المَبَاسِمِ نارُ
See how smiles whisperingly huddle in its bosom
Nearly causing fire to spurt on lips thereby
إن لم يَكُنْ في الأرضِ حُبٌّ وارِفٌ
فَلِمَنْ تُبَاعُ وَتُشتَرَى الأَزهارُ؟
Unless Love is abundantly present on this earthly stage
For whom, then, are flowers sold and bought
وَلِمَنْ يُسَاقُ الشَّوقُ عِندَ جُنُونِهِ؟
وَلِمَنْ يُمَاطُ عَنِ الجَمَالِ خِمَارُ؟
And to whom is longing offered when madly persistent
And for whom the veil of beauty removed
وَلِمَنْ تَوَرَّدَتِ الخُدُودُ، وَأَسْفَرَتْ؟
وَلِمَنْ تَعَانَقَ مِعْصَمٌ وَسِوَارُ؟
And for whom are cheeks revealed, roseate in hue
And for whose sake bracelets and wrists lock in embrace

يا صَاحِبِي: كُلٌّ رَهِينُ طِبَاعِهِ
والطَّبْعُ يَغْلِبَ.. لَنْ يُفيدَ حِوارُ
O Friend! To each his own;
Character once revealed, further discussion is useless indeed

انْظُرْ إِلَى هذا الوُجُودِ، فقدْ تَرَى
رَوْضًا تُسَيِّجُ وَرْدَهُ الأَحجَارُ
Look at this world and you may behold
A garden of flowers fenced by stones


هلْ تُوقِفُ الأَحجَارُ نَهْرَ عَبِيرِهِ؟
وَكَذَا الْهَوَى.. دَانَتْ لَهُ الأَسْوَارُ!!
Will stones ever be able to keep the river of fragrance in check
So do all barriers give in to love


لكن مخاوفه تضاعفت وازداد قلقه عن ذي قبل.
But the night was as troublesome to him as the day


أما صاحبنا فكان
يختلي بنفسه بين الحين والآخر
Wherefore he began to retire himself to his chamber


والكآبة
تعلو محياه،
and greatly distressed in his mind

[إسلام بدي]

أو حتى إذا توخَّى الحذر الشديد لعدم إسقاط أي شيء .
or even if he was sliding around being extra cautious about not dropping anything
وإصدار أي ضوضاء —
and not making a noise—
كان والده يكشِّر عن أنيابه
his father was apt to start showing his teeth
ويزمجر كالكلب.
and snarling like a dog.
قد يرى البعض مظهره مضحكًا — بل إنه كذلك بالفعل —
It would have been ridiculous—it was ridiculous—
لكنه يكون جادًّا حين يفعل ذلك؛
except that he meant business.
فبعد دقيقة، يكون الطعام والأطباق على الأرض،
A minute later the food and the dishes might be on the floor,
والكراسي أو المائدة مقلوبة،
and the chairs or the table overturned,
وقد يطارد سيسي أيضًا في أرجاء الغرفة
and he might be chasing Cece around the room
وهو يصيح موضِّحًا كيف سينال منه هذه المرة،
yelling how he was going to get him this time,
ويسوي وجهه على الموقد الساخن،
flatten his face on the hot burner,
ويسأله عن رأيه فيما سيحدث له
how would he like that?
وأي شخص يراه سيظن أنه مجنون..
You would be certain he ’d gone crazy.
كان وجهه يعود إلى طبيعته في الحال،
his face would reassemble itself in no time
بصوت مازح
in a loud bantering voice.
«تظن نفسك غلامًا ذكيًّا، أليس كذلك؟
Smart bugger, aren’t you?
ويقول له إنه يجدر به الاحتراس.
and telling him he better watch out.
لم يعرف أيٌّ من الصبية الآخرين مدى براعة سيسي في المطبخ
None of the other boys knew how practiced he was in the kitchen
انطوت كل تحية من هذه التحيات على درجة من المزاح
All these greetings had a degree of jocularity,
حتى وإن كانوا يعرفونهم حق المعرفة
even if they knew them well.
أما الرجال، فلم يتجشَّموا عناء إلقاء التحية على الصبية بالاسم
Men didn’t bother greeting boys by name,
كأنها غُمِست في طلاء ما.
as if they had been dipped in paint.
وأطاح بأي قارب أو كوخ مرَّ عليه.
and bashed any boat or hut within its reach.
وبسبب الرواسب الفيضانية التي أتت من الحقول وعكَّرت صفو المياه بالوحل،
With the runoff from the fields muddying the water
وضوء الشمس الباهت المنعكس على صفحة النهر،
and the pale sunlight on its surface,
فسوف تجمد الدم في عروقك
it would freeze your blood
وتقذف بك في البحيرة،
and fling you out into the lake,
هذا إذا لم تهشم رأسك على الدعامات الخشبية أولًا
if it didn’t brain you against the buttresses first.
، واقتلع الأشجار الصغيرة من جذورها
and tore out the young trees
لكن ذلك العهد قد ولى في نظرهم
But that time had vanished for them;
حتى آوت أنغامهم إلى نفسه السخية
Thus their tunes found shelter in his hospitable
soul,
كما تأوى البلابل إلى شجرة مورقة،
like nightingales in a leafy tree.
أما روحه فتطرب وتغمرها الأريحية،
Spiritually he was transported and
overwhelmed
وأما جسمه فتهتاج حواسه
Physically his senses were strongly aroused,
وترقص أطرافه خاصة الرأس واليدان،
setting him dancing,
particularly his head and hands.
فيهز رأسه طربًا
he would nod his head,
وترف على شفتيه ابتسامة أشواق ،
smile lasciviously,
ويفرقع بأصابعه
snap his
fingers,
وقد يشدو مترنمًا إذا كان إلى نفسه خاليًا
and sing along when alone.
ومع هذا فلم يكن الغناء هوى منفردًا يجذبه لذاته فحسب
Singing, however, was not an isolated
pleasure attracting him for itself.

، ولكنه كان زهرة فى طاقة ،
It was a flower in a bouquet,
يحلو بها وتحلو به
gaining beauty
from the setting and contributing to it
ومرحبًا بين الصديق الصافى والحبيب الوفى
How welcome it was in the company of a
close friend and loyal comrade
فهو جميل حبيب بلا شك،،
however fine and agreeable that might be,
ولكنه غاب عن جوَّه وبيئته وملابساته
lacked the appropriate
atmosphere, ambiance, and environment
وهيهات أن يقنع به القلب
How preposterous to think his heart
should be satisfied with that!
، إنه يتوق إلى أن يفصل بين النغمة والنغمة بنكتة تهتز لها النفوس، .
What he liked was to interpose a witty remark
between one tune and the next to set everyone laughing,
وأن يسابق الترديد بالنهل من كأس مترعة،
to take a sip from a full
glass
ويفضى إليها بما فى طويته
He would tell her his innermost thoughts
رجل حلو المعشر يتبسط معها فى الحديث
He was
companionable and talkative

ثم يتعاونون جميعًا على التهليل والتكبير
Then they would all join in expressing their
admiration
فلا يطيق أن يخلو منه مجلسه،
He would
not tolerate a party without song.
ولا يأبه للشقة البعيدة يقطعها إلى أطراف القاهرة
It was nothing for him to journey a long way, to the outskirts of Cairo
ولكم تمنت لو يتطبع بنفس اللين النسبى وهو صاح منتبه، .
. She dearly wished he would be
that good humored when he was sober
and in his right mind.
وكم عجبت لهذه المعصية التى ترقق حواشيه،
She was thoroughly
amazed that this sin made him more amiable.
وتحيرت طويلا بين ما تجد نحوها من كراهية دينية موروثة
She was torn for a long time
between her hatred for it, based on her religious training,
وبين ما تجنى منها من راحة وسلام،
and the comfort and
peace she gained from it.


ولكنها دفنت أفكارها فى أعماق نفسها،
She buried her thoughts deep inside her,
ودارتها مداراة من لا يطيق أن يعترف بها
however, and
concealed them as though unable
أما السيد فكان أحرص ما يكون على وقاره وحزمه، .
Her husband spared no effort to safeguard his dignity and authority
وما يصدر عنه من لطف فخلسة يصدر،
His
moments of tenderness were fleeting and accidental
وربما جرت على شفتيه ابتسامة عريضة
, a broad
smile might appear on his lips
لذكرى طافت به من ذكريات سهرته السعيدة
at a memory that cropped up from his happy
evening.
فسرعان ما ينتبه إلى نفسه،
At once he would get control of himself
ويطبق شفتيه،
and press his lips together
ويسترق إلى زوجه نظرة
while stealing a glance at his wife.
فيجدها كعادتها بين يديه خافضة العينين،
He would find her as usual, in front of him,
with her eyes lowered
فيطمئن ويعود إلى ذكرياته
Reassured, he would return to his memories
نهم إلى مسرات الحياة لا يروى
an unquenchable thirst for the pleasures of
life
وما برحت تطن فى أذنيه الدعابات واللطائف
He could still hear the jokes,
wisecracks,
والنكات التى تجود قريحته بدورها،

ويتذكر أثرها فى النفوس

وكأن مزمارًا قد نطق فجأة بصوت واضح.
and it was as though an oboe had suddenly become articulate

شعره مشعث،
his hair matted,

ووجهه ملطَّخ بصورة بشعة، به كدمات ورضوض،
his face grotesquely smudged and bruised,

وثيابه رثَّة ملوَّثة بالوحل،
his clothes in rags and muddy,

مستلقيًا بين أوراق الأشجار الذابلة وكأنه جثة هامدة،
Lying there like a corpse in the dead leaves

فاعتدل قائمًا وقال لها: شكرًا لك يا عزيزتي.
"Thank you, darling," he said and sat up.

وأحس ألمًا حادًّا بركبته اليمنى،
A sharp pain stabbed at his right knee

أخذ الصوت يردد هذه الكلمة دون أدنى اختلاف في النغم.
the voice insisted without the slightest change of tone.


ولشدَّ ما كانت حيرته
with bewilderment,

ولكن الصوت أخذ يردد القول: بشكل يدعو إلى العجب ويخلو من المعنى!
the voice insisted--how strangely, how senselessly!


ووقعت عينه على تلك الممرضة النحيلة خفيفة الحركة
he saw the small brisk nurse

وهي تَخُبُّ في السير أمامه
hurrying ahead of him

على طول الدهليز الأخضر،
along the green corridor,

وطرقت أُذنَه خشخشة ردائها المُنَشَّى
heard the dry creaking of her starched clothes.

ومرة أخرى اهتزت أصابعها.
Once more the fingers stirred.

وفي بطءٍ زائد وبجهد بادٍ أطبقت على يده
Slowly, with what was evidently an enormous effort,


وسارع إلى إقناع نفسه
he hastened to assure himself.

فلقد كان الطريق مبتلًّا،
The road was wet,

وانزلقت العربة عبر الخط الأبيض،
the car had skidded across the white line.

وهو أمرٌ يتكرر حدوثه،
It was one of those things that happen all the time.

والصحف مليئة بأمثاله،
The papers are full of them;

وما أكثر ما أُبلغ عن أشباهها،
he had reported them by the dozen.
