أعلاه
Callinicos, of Heliopolis, Syria, flourished c. 673 AD. Architect to whom Byzantine chroniclers ascribe the invention of the "Greek fire", which is said to hav ebeen used for the first time at the seige of Constantinople by the Arabs in 673 AD, the Muslim fleet being fired at by its means. It was probably a mixture of quicklime, naphtha, pitch, and sulphur and could spread under water. Whether it contained saltpeter or not is a moot question
